Who is the main character of Blue Lock?

Yoichi Isagi. Ego's invitation reaches him just after his school side misses out on nationals, a defeat that turned on a late pass Isagi made instead of shooting. Blue Lock exists to train that instinct out of him. He arrives ranked among the weakest of the 300 recruits, then eliminates Ryosuke Kira, the "Crown Jewel of Japan", in the entrance game of tag: nerve beats reputation from episode one.

His weapon keeps growing. Spatial awareness, knowing where a goal will happen a beat early, sharpens into the Direct Shot (a first-time finish) and later Metavision, a constant scan of the pitch that lets him predict, then hijack, everyone else's plays. He is also the shortest player in the table above, which suits a story about a brain outplaying bodies. Kazuki Ura voices him and returns for season 3.

Team Z: Bachira, Kunigami, Chigiri and Gagamaru

Ego's shirt numbers are rankings, and Team Z is the lowest-ranked squad in Isagi's building. Jingo Raichi, Wataru Kuon and the comic-relief Gurimu "Igaguri" Igarashi are in the squad too, but these four carry it.

Meguru Bachira: the dribbler with a monster

Bachira is the first player to treat Isagi as an equal, and he beats defenders in phone-box spaces, guided by a "monster" inside him. Episode 19, in the Second Selection, explains it: a lonely childhood in which nobody could keep up with his football, so he invented a companion who could. His arc is learning that he does not need Isagi, or anyone, to play his best. That stretch is where the cheerful sidekick becomes a co-lead.

Rensuke Kunigami: the would-be superhero

Kunigami is the clean-cut idealist, openly determined to be the hero who wins Japan a World Cup. His weapon is a powerful left-footed shot from range, and at 188 cm he is a threat in the air too. He is knocked out in the Second Selection after a loss to Shidou's side, and his colder, changed return (manga only so far) is one of the first big beats waiting for season 3.

Hyoma Chigiri: the speed he was afraid to use

The fastest player in Blue Lock spends the first act refusing to sprint flat out, because an ACL injury nearly ended his career. Against Team W in episode 7 he finally commits to a full-speed run, still one of season 1's best scenes because it is a character decision, not a power-up. He plays on the wing, one of the few recruits with a natural home away from centre forward.

Gin Gagamaru: the striker who ended up in goal

Deadpan and frighteningly flexible, Gagamaru contorts into shots no coach would teach. After the Third Selection his body, reflexes and 191 cm reach earn him the gloves, and he keeps goal for Blue Lock against Japan U-20: the series quietly admitting that eleven strikers cannot play football.

Team V: Nagi and Reo

Seishiro Nagi: the genius who could not be bothered

Nagi had no interest in football until his classmate Reo Mikage noticed he could kill any pass dead with one touch. That trapping is still the best in the cast: he controls balls that should be uncontrollable and is facing goal before defenders reset. His catchphrase translates as "what a pain". Team Z's win over Team V is the first defeat that truly gets under his skin, and the shock wakes him up; his growing fixation on Isagi in the Second Selection then pulls him away from Reo. The film Blue Lock: Episode Nagi (April 2024) retells his route from his side.

Reo Mikage: the copycat with something to prove

Heir to the Mikage Corporation, Reo has everything money can buy except a World Cup won with Nagi beside him. His weapon is copying, hence the nickname Chameleon: he can reproduce almost any technique he sees, as long as his own body can physically do it. That limit is his arc. He is the most useful teammate in Blue Lock and rarely anyone's choice as the star.

The rivals at the top: Rin Itoshi and Shoei Barou

Rin Itoshi: the No. 1 who wants one opponent

Ranked first from the start, Rin has Isagi's skill set further refined: precise shooting, tempo control and scanning, plus contempt for everyone around him. As boys, Rin and his older brother Sae shared a dream of becoming the world's best together, until Sae came home from Spain and tore it up. Shoei Barou: the King who learned to steal

Barou calls himself the King and plays like one: big, physical and convinced every attack should end with his shot. Team X are Team Z's first opponents, and he is why that match hurts. Being forced into a trio with Isagi and Nagi in the Second Selection, against Reo, Chigiri and Kunigami, makes him rethink everything, and he re-emerges as a self-styled villain who lurks inside Isagi's plays and steals the goal at the end of them.

Japan U-20: Sae Itoshi, Ryusei Shidou and Oliver Aiku

Season 2's opponent is Japan's official U-20 side, and if Blue Lock loses, the project is shut down. Sae Itoshi, regarded as Japan's best player, is a midfielder in Spain's Re Al youth ranks and one of the New Generation World XI, the world's best eleven under-20s. He left Japan to become the world's best striker and came home a midfielder, the reversal that broke his brother. Ryusei Shidou is chaos at 185 cm; Sae hand-picked him for the U-20 squad and only stays in the match once Shidou comes off the bench at half-time; from then on, nothing is predictable. Supporting players worth knowing

Jyubei Aryu (listed at 195 cm) and the anxious, physically monstrous Aoshi Tokimitsu make up Rin's trio in the Second Selection, the side that beats Isagi, Bachira and Nagi and takes Bachira. Zantetsu Tsurugi is Team V's third star. Analyst Tabito Karasu and stealthy runner Eita Otoya come into focus in season 2, and Ikki Niko drops into Blue Lock's back line against the U-20 side.

Jinpachi Ego is hired after Japan's round-of-16 exit at the 2018 World Cup, arguing that the world's best striker must be its greatest egoist. He ranks 300 young forwards by shirt number and bars anyone who fails from ever representing Japan. Anri Teieri, the young official who brought him in, spends the series defending the project against an old guard that wants it gone.

Neo Egoist League: who joins which club

Spoiler warning: this section covers the opening of the Neo Egoist League, which is manga only until season 3 airs.

After the U-20 match, five European clubs set up inside Blue Lock, each led by a world-class "master striker", and every player chooses one. Isagi, Kunigami and Gagamaru join Germany's Bastard München, home of Michael Kaiser, his devoted playmaker Alexis Ness and Noel Noa, the world's top-ranked player. Nagi, Reo and Chigiri go to England's Manshine City under Chris Prince; Bachira and Otoya pick Spain's FC Barcha and Lavinho. Where the anime has reached (as of October 2026)

Season 1 (Eight Bit, 24 episodes, 9 October 2022 to 26 March 2023) covers the entrance test, the First and Second Selections and the start of the Third. Episode Nagi reached Japanese cinemas on 19 April 2024. Season 2, vs. U-20 Japan, ran 14 episodes from 5 October to 28 December 2024 and closes on Isagi's last-gasp winner and its aftermath; to continue in the manga, start the Neo Egoist League at chapter 152. Season 3, Blue Lock: Neo Egoist League, was announced in September 2025 and titled in June 2026, but as of October 2026 has no officially confirmed broadcast date.
