Dot Barrett

Dot Barrett is loud, hot-blooded, easily provoked, very proud of his magic, and increasingly unsure of what to do with the fact that he genuinely likes Mash Burnedead — a person with no magic who should not, by every criterion Dot was taught, be someone he respects.

Background

He arrived at Easton Magic Academy with real magical capability and a real chip on his shoulder — a combination that puts him in loud conflict with most people around him, which he treats as a reasonable approach to the world. His family background and the specific reasons for his pride in his magic are part of what the series reveals when it takes his character more seriously than early episodes suggest it will. He ended up in the same dormitory as Mash Burnedead and Lance Crown — the magicless anomaly and the academically flawless top student — and had to develop a response to both that wasn't just volume. His warmth for the people he has decided are his becomes the series' clearest evidence that his loud exterior is real but not the whole thing: he fights for his dormitory companions with the same intensity he fights for himself, and eventually this becomes more defining than his provokability.

Personality

He communicates at a volume suggesting he's always one comment from a fight, which is sometimes true and sometimes just how he sounds. His actual loyalty is quieter than his expressions of it and more reliable. The series develops his character by revealing what the bluster is protecting rather than simply reducing the bluster.

Relationships

• Mash Burnedead — the dormmate he couldn't initially categorize, whose magicless advancement required him to update his entire framework for what genuine capability looks like
• Lance Crown — the top-ranked rival who shares his dormitory, whose self-possession creates a different kind of contrast with Dot's expressiveness
• Finn Ames and Lemon Irvine — the other dormmates whose situations become part of what Dot treats as his collective responsibility as he grows into his character

Role in the Story

Dot is Mashle's study in what happens when someone who organized their identity around a hierarchy encounters evidence that the hierarchy is incomplete — and what they do with the dissonance between what they were taught to value and what they're actually witnessing.
