Frankenstein

Frankenstein — the name he gave himself, or that history gave him — is Chairman of Ye Ran High School, the most loyal servant the Noblesse has ever had, and the holder of the Dark Spear, which he considers a reasonable last resort for someone who has exhausted every other option.

Background

His history predates the modern setting by centuries — he is a human who pursued scientific knowledge beyond conventional limits, including experiments that made him categorically different from what he started as and drew him into contact with the Noble world. His devotion to Raizel is established before the series begins: it is one of the constants of his long life and the organizing principle of the present-day story, which begins with his discovery that Raizel has awakened after 820 years of sealing. He prepared for this — the school, the location, the cover identity — with the patience of someone not certain when it would be needed but certain it would be. His scientific capabilities continue to develop; his combat capability, when released, is formidable enough that his loyalty to Raizel's preference for restraint represents a genuine constraint on what he would otherwise do. The Dark Spear is the clearest expression of this — it is powerful in proportion to how much of himself he is willing to sacrifice to wield it.

Composed with warmth directed specifically at people who have earned it — his public persona as a mild-mannered school chairman and his actual personality are the same person, which is not typical of characters with his capability and history. His protectiveness of Raizel is absolute and expressed through the thoroughness of his preparation rather than through declaration.

Relationships

• Cadis Etrama di Raizel — the Noblesse, his master and the person around whom his long centuries of preparation are organized; their relationship is the series' central devotion expressed across an extraordinary span of time
• The Ye Ran students — the humans who become part of Raizel's circle and whom Frankenstein extends his protection to as a consequence of that relationship

Role in the Story

Frankenstein is Noblesse's study in what loyalty looks like when measured in centuries rather than years — when someone has organized a very long existence around being ready for a specific other person, and that readiness is finally required.
