Gabimaru

Gabimaru the Hollow is the most dangerous shinobi produced by the hidden village of Iwagakure in Hell's Paradise — and also someone who cannot stop thinking about his wife, which is the detail that makes him interesting and the reason the "hollow" epithet was never entirely accurate.

Background

Gabimaru was raised from infancy by the village chief, who used him as a weapon and trained him to function without feelings. The hollow epithet was meant to describe his emptiness. It did not entirely work. When he is sent to Shinsenkyo — the legendary island known as Paradise — to retrieve the Elixir of Life for the shogunate, his stated motivation is to earn his freedom and return to his wife. The claim contradicts everything his village trained him to be, which is why his assigned executioner Sagiri initially finds it suspicious, and why it is ultimately true. His relationship to violence is a productive contradiction: he is unambiguously excellent at killing and also, quietly, trying to get back to someone he loves.

Personality

Blunt, spare in speech, and organised around a single motivating fact. His emotional range appears limited but his commitment to getting home provides more genuine characterisation than most shinobi protagonists' more elaborate inner lives. He is not performing simplicity; he actually is this direct, and the wife is actually the point.

Relationships

• Sagiri — his assigned executioner who becomes his partner on the island; the relationship develops through shared danger into something genuinely mutual and eventually foundational to both their arcs

Role in the Story

Gabimaru is Hell's Paradise's argument that the thing that made a weapon dangerous can also be the thing that makes them human — that the gap between "hollow" and "complete" is smaller than his village needed him to believe, and that the person they tried to erase was simply waiting.
