Hideyoshi Nagachika

Hideyoshi Nagachika — Hide — is the most observant person in Ken Kaneki's life, the childhood friend who saw what was happening to him before Kaneki saw it himself, and whose loyalty runs so deep that the series makes what it costs him feel like a consequence rather than a sacrifice.

Background

Hide and Kaneki grew up together, their friendship formed in the particular way of people who meet early enough that their connection precedes self-consciousness about it. Hide studied at Kamii University alongside Kaneki and sustained a cheerful, socially fluent exterior that most people took at face value. What the series gradually reveals is that behind that exterior, Hide was tracking every change in Kaneki with the attention of someone who has been paying careful attention all along — noticing when Kaneki's eating habits changed, when his personality shifted, when the person he knew was being replaced by someone colder.
