Hiromi Higa

Hiromi Higa arranges flowers for a living, treats his customers with genuine warmth, and transforms completely when night falls and S begins — becoming Shadow, the most theatrically aggressive and arrogantly self-important presence at the underground skateboarding competition he helped found.

Background

He is one of the original founders of S, which gives him a particular relationship to the competition's identity and direction that newer participants don't share. His daytime life as a florist is genuinely warm and civic — the same hands that aggressively push opponents toward wipeouts during nighttime beefs arrange bouquets with real care during the day. The dual life isn't a secret exactly, but the contrast is stark enough that the two versions of Hiromi Higa feel like separate personalities rather than a single person with two modes. His Shadow persona is theatrical, deliberately provocative, and capable of real cruelty toward opponents he decides deserve it. His daytime self is the version that apparently most of his non-S social life knows. The series is interested in what it says about people that they can contain both, and which one is the real thing — a question it applies to several of the adult S founders, but to Hiromi with particular consistency.

He is not secretly warm during his S matches, and he is not secretly cold at his flower shop — both versions are real, which is the more interesting answer than a simple reveal that one is a mask.

Role in the Story

Hiromi is SK8's study in the gap between persona and person — neither as a villain nor as a hidden hero, but as a genuinely divided person who exists fully in two separate contexts and has organized his life so that neither needs to acknowledge the other. The series eventually asks what happens when the contexts stop being separate.
