Shunsui Kyouraku is among the oldest and most powerful captains in Soul Society's Gotei 13 — a figure whose unhurried, sake-loving exterior has been mistaken for indifference by everyone who didn't survive the mistake.
Background
Kyouraku and Jushiro Ukitake were the first students to graduate from the Shinigami Academy, trained directly under Genryuusai Yamamoto. He has served as captain of the 8th Division for centuries, with Nanao Ise as his lieutenant — a relationship the later arcs reveal carries history that is more significant than it initially appears. His formal full name reflects his ancient lineage and the ceremonial structure of Soul Society's oldest families. His understanding of Yamamoto and of Soul Society's institutional memory runs deeper than most of his contemporaries, which shapes how he processes events that others treat as unprecedented.
