Kallen Stadtfeld

from Code Geass: Lelouch of the RebellionPopular character

Kallen Stadtfeld is a main character in Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion, a half-Britannian, half-Japanese student living a double life: a frail noble at Ashford Academy by day, and the Black Knights' fiercest Knightmare Frame ace, piloting the Guren Mk-II under the masked rebel Zero.

Background

Kallen is born into the Britannian noble house of Stadtfeld through her father, while her Japanese mother stays on in the household as a servant after the empire annexes Japan and renames it Area 11. That leaves her legally Britannian and privately something else entirely. Her older brother, Naoto Kozuki, led a resistance cell in the Shinjuku ghetto, and after his death she keeps fighting beside his surviving comrades under the Kozuki name. She enters the story during the Shinjuku incident, driving a stolen truck through a military crackdown, when a stranger's voice on the radio starts giving orders that actually work.

Powers & Abilities

AbilityWhat it does
Knightmare Frame pilotingElite reflexes and instincts that keep her dangerous even in an obsolete machine.
Guren Mk-IIA one-off Japanese prototype built for her by the Black Knights' engineer, Rakshata.
Radiant wave surgerThe Guren's right arm clamps onto enemy armour and makes it swell until it ruptures.
Hand-to-hand combatShe fights on foot as well, and is not someone to corner in a corridor.

The Guren is built around one overwhelming weapon rather than a balanced loadout, which suits how Kallen fights: close the distance, force the exchange, treat a mismatch on paper as a problem for nerve to solve. Later upgrades add flight, but it is the pilot, not the frame, that Britannia plans around.

Personality

Kallen runs hot. At Ashford she performs a soft, sickly heiress, complete with a cough and a standing excuse for absences, and the act works well enough that classmates worry about her walking to class. Out of that uniform she is blunt, fast to anger, and openly impatient with anyone who spends Japanese lives cheaply. She is also the one asking uncomfortable questions inside the Black Knights: being lied to for her own good stings far more than being sent somewhere lethal.

Relationships

  • Lelouch Lamperouge: a classmate she cannot read, and the gap between him and the man she follows into war drives most of her arc.
  • Suzaku Kururugi: her sharpest rival in the field, another Japanese pilot who chose Britannia's uniform, so every clash doubles as an argument.
  • C.C.: an unreadable presence near Zero whose closeness Kallen resents long before she understands it.
  • Naoto Kozuki: her late brother, whose cause she inherits and whose surname she fights under.

Role in the Story

Kallen is the ground-level view of the rebellion. Zero moves armies from a distance; she holds the line in person, and the Black Knights' early victories depend on her buying minutes nobody else could buy. She is also the story's loyalty test: she believes in the cause first and the man behind the mask second, so every new truth about Zero forces her to weigh one against the other. Frequently asked

What Knightmare Frame does Kallen pilot?

She starts out in a battered, outdated Glasgow during the Shinjuku fighting, then receives the Guren Mk-II, a prototype built for her. Its right arm carries the radiant wave surger, and upgraded versions of the Guren remain her machine into the second season.

Is Kallen in love with Lelouch?

Her feelings are real and the series is deliberate about them, but they are tangled up with her loyalty to Zero and her anger at being kept in the dark. Code Geass treats the two as one problem: what she feels about Lelouch and what she decides about Zero are one question.
