Kazuya Kinoshita

Kazuya Kinoshita ended a real relationship, started a rental arrangement as a temporary fix for how bad he felt about it, and then made a series of decisions that turned that arrangement into the most complicated interpersonal situation in his very normal Tokyo life.

Background

He's a college student in Tokyo who was dumped by his girlfriend and, in a moment of low self-esteem and poor judgment, rented a girlfriend through a dating rental service. The girlfriend he rented was Chizuru Mizuhara — professional, composed, and very good at her job. He rated her poorly out of pettiness; she confronted him honestly; and the encounter produced a situation neither planned: she was performing a girlfriend role for his hospitalized grandmother when her own grandmother appeared at the same hospital, meaning both had to maintain the fiction that their rental relationship was real to spare both families a specific kind of disappointment. This is the premise. The series is about what happens over the extended period in which Kazuya tries to resolve this while developing genuine feelings and making consistently imperfect decisions, surrounded by other girls from the rental service who have their own reasons for being where they are.
