Kei Karuizawa

Kei Karuizawa holds the center of class 1-D's informal social hierarchy, and the series is interested in the gap between what that position looks like from outside and what it was built to protect on the inside.

Background

Karuizawa was bullied severely in middle school, a history she keeps private. Her response was structural: she positioned herself at the center of her social environment rather than its periphery, because the periphery was where damage was possible. At the school, she is among the most socially influential students in her class. Kiyotaka Ayanokouji identifies her social utility and recruits her as a secret ally — a working arrangement that evolves into something she did not anticipate. Kakeru Ryuuen eventually identifies her as a lever against Ayanokouji and applies pressure directly, constituting the series' most sustained examination of what her persona has actually been defending.
