Keishin Ukai

Keishin Ukai became Karasuno's head coach against his own considered judgment and then discovered that his judgment about this specific team was wrong — that he had inherited more from his grandfather than a name and a volleyball store, and that the team in front of him was worth taking seriously as a project.

Background

Ukai took on the Karasuno coaching role in a temporary, reluctant capacity when the team's regular advisor could not fill it. His grandfather Ikkei Ukai was Karasuno's legendary former coach — the man responsible for the team's historical success and the standard against which everything the current program does is implicitly measured. Keishin's resistance was genuine: he runs a volleyball store, he has an existing life, and coaching a high school team was not what he had arranged for himself. What changed was the specific quality of what he saw once he actually watched. The team had something that coaching could develop — an unusual combination of technical talent and interpersonal complexity that required guidance rather than just management — and Ukai turned out to be someone who understood how to develop it. By the time the series is deep into its tournament arcs, the temporary arrangement has become something neither party imagines undoing.
