Klein Moretti
from Lord of MysteriesPopular character
Klein Moretti is the young analyst-turned-Beyonder who stumbles into a world of eldritch powers and secret societies — and survives by being considerably more careful than anyone expects of someone who just became supernatural.
Background
He arrives in the Loen Kingdom with memories that don't belong to the body he's inhabiting, in a world running on a system of Sequence-based powers that function like a tiered superpower hierarchy derived from supernatural pathways. He has the knowledge of his original world — a modern era — and the caution to know that knowledge alone doesn't make him safe. He begins as a low-ranked civil servant turned Nighthawk auxiliary, working alongside a Church-affiliated supernatural investigation unit. His advance through the Seer pathway — vision, divination, spirit perception — is characterized by the same carefulness that defines his personality: he researches before he acts, he prepares alternatives before he commits, and he keeps secrets about what he actually knows and can do until keeping them is no longer useful. He creates a persona called The Fool for an informal gathering of Beyonders who address him as a mysterious and ancient entity of great power, without knowing he is simultaneously a low-level new recruit learning the basics. The gap between the performance and the reality, and his management of it, is one of the series' central pleasures.
Powers & Abilities
| Ability | What it does |
|---|---|
| Seer Pathway (Clairvoyance & Divination) | His initial Sequence grants him the ability to perceive spiritual activity, access prophetic glimpses, and read situations through non-standard information — useful both for investigation work and for avoiding threats before they materialize |
| Sequence Advancement | The Beyonder system advances through consuming specific potions and digesting their power through experience; his progression through the Seer pathway gives him increasingly broad capabilities as he demonstrates the discipline each Sequence requires |
| Preparation and Information Gathering | Not a formal power but a consistent force multiplier — he rarely enters a situation without having researched it, and his habit of understanding rules before breaking them keeps him alive in a world where overconfident Beyonders tend to transform into monsters |
Personality
Cautious, precise, and consistently aware that the gap between what he knows and what could kill him is narrower than he'd like. He has a dry sense of humor that functions mainly as a coping mechanism. He cares about the people around him more than he lets on and tends to help them in ways that don't obviously connect back to him, which serves both his warmth and his operational security simultaneously.
Relationships
- Audrey Hall — a fellow Tarot Club member whose Spectator pathway and perceptive nature make her one of the more interesting presences in his improvised secret society; their interactions are conducted under the performance he maintains
- The Tarot Club — an informal gathering he established and leads under the Fool persona, comprising Beyonders from different factions and pathways who provide him genuine connection alongside the comedic irony of people treating him as ancient and all-knowing
Role in the Story
Klein is Lord of Mysteries' argument that the most dangerous thing in a world of eldritch powers is a person who is careful — who reads the rules, understands the costs, and acts accordingly rather than charging forward on confidence. His arc is a study in how preparation and genuine intellectual engagement with a dangerous world can substitute for raw power, at least for a while.
