Lucy Montgomery

Lucy Montgomery is an American Guild member in Bungo Stray Dogs whose transformation from antagonist to ally the series uses to show what happens when someone from a coercive environment encounters genuine community for the first time.

Background

Montgomery is a member of the Guild, the American-based organization that arrives in Yokohama in competition with the Armed Detective Agency and the Port Mafia. Like other Guild members, she is named after a real author — the Canadian writer of Anne of Green Gables — and her ability reflects the subject matter of that author's work. She is introduced as an antagonist and constitutes a significant threat due to her ability, but her position within the Guild involves considerably more coercion than is visible from outside. Her eventual change in alignment reflects what she discovers about what the Agency actually is when she encounters it directly rather than as an adversary organization.

Personality

Initially hostile and professionally aligned with the Guild's methods. Her response to the Agency's treatment of her — matter-of-fact and respectful rather than instrumental — is the beginning of her actual characterization rather than her function as an obstacle.

Role in the Story

Lucy is Bungo Stray Dogs' most complete example of someone who becomes an ally through genuine exposure to an alternative — not through persuasion or strategy but through the simple experience of being treated without agenda. Her arc is quiet and effective precisely because it is not dramatic.
