Mina Ashido

from My Hero AcademiaFan favourite

Mina Ashido — hero name Pinky — is Class 1-A's acid-manipulating dancer, a student whose cheerful exterior and genuine warmth have always coexisted with a combat style that is quietly one of the more dangerous in her class.

Background

Mina's Quirk, Acid, manifests as the ability to secrete corrosive fluid from her body and control its properties — viscosity, concentration, and spread. She has pink skin, bright yellow sclera, and small horns, presenting as one of Class 1-A's most visibly non-human students. Before U.A., she was socially central at her middle school — popular, energetic, and genuinely liked — which is a somewhat unusual background for a shonen protagonist and one the series uses to note that she and Bakugou attended the same middle school, where she was one of the people who interacted with him as a peer rather than a subject. Her dance training gives her footwork and spatial awareness that translate directly into combat agility.

Powers & Abilities

AbilityWhat it does
Acid SecretionProduces and expels corrosive acid from her skin; can adjust its corrosive strength from mild to highly destructive
Acid VeilCreates a barrier or platform of acid for defence or mobility — can stand and slide on her own acid safely
AcidmanFull-body acid cover that dramatically increases the corrosive threat zone around her; extended use risks harm to her own skin
Dance AgilityYears of dance training produce exceptional footwork and spatial coordination that enhance her evasion and combat rhythm

Personality

Genuinely warm rather than performatively cheerful — she is actually interested in the people around her, actually happy to be doing what she does, and actually frightened in ways she usually manages to push through. The series occasionally notes that her outgoing energy masks a low academic self-image; she works harder at the physical elements of heroics than the written examinations, which she approaches with significant anxiety.

Relationships

  • Izuku Midoriya — classmate; Deku's earnestness complements her own warmth; the two are part of the same social unit that functions as Class 1-A's emotional core
  • Ochako Uraraka — close friend within the class; the two share the kind of friendship built on genuine liking rather than proximity alone
  • Katsuki Bakugou — middle school acquaintance; their history is one of the small background details the series uses to populate Bakugou's world before U.A.
  • Eijirou Kirishima — classmate whose own outgoing nature meshes naturally with hers; they are often grouped in the series' ensemble passages

Role in the Story

Mina is My Hero Academia's reminder that Class 1-A contains genuine personalities rather than archetypes waiting for a spotlight. She earns attention through warmth and specificity — the dance background, the anxiety about written exams, the middle school social history — and when she's given a combat spotlight she makes it count without the series needing to over-explain her significance.
