Myne

Myne — later Rozemyne — is Ascendance of a Bookworm's protagonist, a reincarnated librarian who wakes up in a medieval world without affordable books and decides, with absolute seriousness, to make them herself from nothing.

Background

In her previous life she was Urano Motosu, a Japanese university student whose defining characteristic was an overwhelming love of books — she worked at a library, planned to become a librarian, and was buried under a falling bookcase during an earthquake. She reincarnates into the body of a five-year-old girl named Myne in a city called Ehrenfest in a world that has books only as luxury items for the literate nobility and clergy, unavailable to the general population by both cost and law. The body she inhabits is small, physically frail, and carrying a condition called the Devouring — a mana overflow disease that burns through its host from the inside when left unmanaged and was going to kill the original Myne. She has the memories and education of her previous life and the body of a sickly child, and her response to this situation is both the series' central premise and a genuine expression of character: she will not accept a world without books, and she will manufacture the entire supply chain necessary to produce them if that is what the situation requires. Paper, ink, printing, binding — everything must be invented or reinvented from the raw materials available to a lower-city child with limited physical capability and enormous technical knowledge from a different world.

When Myne wants something, she wants it with the specific intensity of someone who has decided that wanting it is the same as working toward it, and the gap between those two things closes faster than it should because she applies intelligence and relentlessness to closing it. She is also genuinely warm — her care for the people who become her family in this new life is real, even as the book goal runs parallel to everything else she does.

Myne is Ascendance of a Bookworm's demonstration that a goal specific enough to drive everything else is sufficient to structure a story — that "I will make books" is an ambition whose pursuit generates politics, relationships, power, conflict, and character development without requiring the story to be about any of those things directly. She is the point around which everything else organizes.
