Rem Galleu

from How NOT to Summon a Demon LordPopular character

Rem Galleu carries the soul of a dormant Demon King inside her body and deals with this by being a competent, pragmatic adventurer who keeps the situation contained while looking for a permanent solution — until she meets someone who accidentally becomes the solution and the source of three new complications simultaneously.

Background

She is a Pantherian — a demi-human race with cat-like features — and an accomplished mage registered with the Mages Association in the world of Cross Reverie, a fantasy realm that mirrors the mechanics of an MMORPG. The soul of Krebskulm, a Demon King whose power would cause catastrophic harm if released, was sealed inside her as an infant by her father as the only available containment method. She has lived with this sealed evil inside her for her entire life, aware of what she is carrying and of what it means if the seal breaks. Her approach to the situation is a combination of researching solutions and being so generally capable that the day-to-day risks she navigates don't compound into the ultimate one. She approaches Diablo — actually Takuma Sakamoto, a socially isolated player transported to what feels like the game he mastered — to attempt using one of his rings for her purposes. The mishap with Diablo's ring results in both her and Shera L. Greenwood entering an enslavement contract with him through the game's Summon mechanic, reversing the intended direction. Her subsequent relationship with Diablo is built on the specific irony that the most powerful mage she has ever encountered is also a person who has no idea what he's doing socially.

Powers & Abilities

AbilityWhat it does
Dark Element MagicHer primary combat magic — darkness-attributed spells that are unusual enough that most opponents haven't adapted for them; her execution of these spells is reliable and informed by genuine understanding of magical theory
Summon MagicThe class mechanics that brought her to Diablo — she is a practitioner of summoning as well as direct magic, and her knowledge of summoning contracts and their conditions is more detailed than the mishap suggests
Physical Combat AbilityBeyond magic, her Pantherian heritage gives her above-average physical attributes — faster reaction time and somewhat greater physical capability than equivalent human adventurers, which she can apply in situations where magic is unavailable or inappropriate

Personality

Controlled and direct, with a visible commitment to competence that extends to not asking for help she thinks she can avoid needing. She is emotionally more reserved than her companion Shera but not cold — she cares about people she is responsible for with a seriousness that occasionally materializes as worry she won't express directly. Her relationship with Diablo develops along the specific track of someone who has identified that this person is genuinely capable and that the social dysfunction is a separate matter from the capability.

Relationships

  • Diablo — the accidental master whose power is real and whose social skills are the specific kind of absent that she finds exhausting in some moments and, eventually, somewhat endearing in others; their dynamic is the series' primary relationship
  • Shera L. Greenwood — her companion and fellow contracted party member, whose warmth and impulsiveness Rem balances with her own measured approach; the series uses their contrasting personalities as the emotional center of the main group

Role in the Story

Rem is How NOT to Summon a Demon Lord's counterweight to the series' lighter elements — she carries an actual stakes-level threat in her body and represents the version of the world that is not comedic. Her arc's emotional core is built around the soul she carries and what it means to have that resolved.
