Ryuunosuke Akutagawa

from Bungo Stray DogsPopular character

Ryūnosuke Akutagawa is a Port Mafia enforcer in Bungou Stray Dogs whose ability to transform his coat into a predatory weapon is matched by his capacity for gratuitous violence — and whose complicated fixation on Osamu Dazai is the series' most interesting character knot.

Background

Akutagawa's childhood in the slums was brutal in ways the series does not soften. He and his sister Gin survived on violence and mutual protection. He was discovered by Dazai, then a Port Mafia executive, who saw his potential and developed it through methods that were effective and deeply damaging simultaneously. Dazai's training was cruel by design; Akutagawa internalised the cruelty as the standard by which ability is measured. By the time the series begins he is one of the Mafia's most feared operatives — efficient, remorseless, and quietly desperate for acknowledgement from a man who has already defected and started over elsewhere. His interactions with Atsushi Nakajima, Dazai's new protégé in the Armed Detective Agency, are structured almost entirely around this dynamic.

Powers & Abilities

AbilityWhat it does
RashōmonHis Ability manifested as his coat; transforms it into a predatory creature capable of rending anything it touches, extending to extraordinary range, and acting with partial independence
Rashōmon: AgitoFull-aperture form where the coat opens to maximum destructive capacity; one of the series' most visually distinctive combat techniques
Precision and StealthMoves silently and with deliberate economy; preferred combat range is close-to-mid
Durability Under IllnessFights at a high level despite a chronic respiratory condition the series does not ignore; the illness is a constant limiting factor

Personality

Cold, precise, and running a constant internal accounting of whether he has been acknowledged by the right person. His contempt for weakness is a mirror of what he was trained to despise in himself. The series gives him enough interiority that this is sad rather than simply villainous.

Relationships

  • Osamu Dazai — his mentor, the person whose approval he has never stopped needing, and who uses Atsushi as a deliberate counterpoint to everything Akutagawa became
  • Chuuya Nakahara — his Port Mafia colleague; professional respect without warmth, which passes for a functional working relationship
  • Atsushi Nakajima — the Agency member whose existence provokes Akutagawa precisely because Dazai chose him

Role in the Story

Akutagawa is BSD's examination of what happens when the thing that made you excellent also broke something essential — his power and his damage are the same thing, and the series is honest about the cost of certain kinds of strength.
