Shera L Greenwood

from How NOT to Summon a Demon LordPopular character

Shera L. Greenwood is an elven princess who ran away from her homeland, summoned a Demon Lord, accidentally made herself his servant instead of the other way around, and has remained enthusiastically committed to how things turned out.

Background

She comes from the royal family of the Greenwood elves, which meant a designated role she didn't choose and political value she didn't request. The circumstances of her flight and her arrival at the human city where she summoned Diablo connect to family pressure she was escaping — the series develops this as actual backstory rather than just a reason for her to be away from home. The Ritual of Summoning was supposed to give her a bound servant; the reflected effect instead bound her to Diablo, which she adapted to with a speed that says something about her flexibility. She is a summoner by training and an archer in combat, with a spirit companion named Klem who becomes one of the series' more significant characters. Her relationship with Diablo develops from the awkward initial situation into genuine mutual loyalty, which she expresses with considerably less ambivalence than he manages.

Powers & Abilities

AbilityWhat it does
Summoning MagicHer primary magical specialty — she can summon spirits and has developed this capability to the point of working with significant spirit companions; her summoning proficiency is legitimate rather than incidental to her character
ArcheryHer combat approach, applied with elven physical precision and magical enhancement; she becomes more effective as the series continues and her combat role develops beyond the initial premise
Greenwood HeritageThe magical affinity from her bloodline — the Greenwood elves' connection to nature magic provides a background capability that complements her summoning focus and becomes relevant in situations tied to her homeland

Personality

Cheerful and direct, with a persistence that reads as stubbornness but is better described as genuine commitment — she decided what she wants and is not interested in revising the decision because someone is being difficult about it. Her affection for the people she cares about is expressed loudly and consistently. She is uncomplicated about her feelings in a way that creates a specific dynamic with characters who are very complicated about theirs.

Relationships

  • Diablo — the Demon Lord she summoned who became her contracted master through her own spell's reversal; whose competence and gradually visible sincerity she is attached to with a directness the series allows to develop
  • Rem Galleu — the pantheran who summoned Diablo alongside her, whose more reserved personality creates a contrasting dynamic with Shera's open expressiveness

Role in the Story

Shera is How Not to Summon a Demon Lord's argument that someone who decides to be genuinely present for the people they care about — without waiting for the situation to be less awkward — is providing something the story needs as much as the dramatic tension.
