Shinpachi Shimura

Shinpachi Shimura is often described as "just a pair of glasses" — and the fact that Gintama has made this joke dozens of times without it getting old tells you something important about how the series works and why Shinpachi is essential to it.

Background

He grew up in Edo, the son of a late dojo master whose death left the Kakidoukan dojo financially threatened. His older sister Otae Shimura runs the dojo with characteristic ferocity. He was working as a waiter at a host club to pay debts — a genuinely degrading situation he endured with the long-suffering dignity that defines his personality — when Gintoki Sakata intervened in a situation involving the dojo and its debt collectors. He joined Yorozuya Gin-chan (Odd Jobs Gin) as a result, and has been there since, serving as the straight man to Gintoki's chaos and Kagura's alien-inflected violence. He is a genuine practitioner of the Shimura style of swordsmanship, trained since childhood, with skill that the series occasionally deploys seriously when it needs to. He is also a devoted follower of the idol Terakado Tsuu (Otsuu), which provides the series with a recurring comedy arc and reveals a dimension of his personality — genuine, unironic enthusiasm — that contrasts productively with his usual exasperation. His defining role in Gintoki's world is the person who notices when things have gone wrong and says so clearly, which is a necessary function in a cast that includes an alien girl who punches things through walls and a samurai who sleeps all day.
