Shinpei Ajiro

Shinpei Ajiro returns to his childhood home for a funeral and discovers that the island he grew up on is a closed system of horror — and that he is the only person in a position to stop it, because dying is the mechanism by which he retains what he's learned.

Background

He grew up on Hitogashima — a small island community off the coast of Japan — before moving to the mainland to attend school in Tokyo. The call that brings him back is the death of Ushio Kofune, his childhood friend, who drowned under circumstances that immediately seem wrong to him. What he arrives to find is that the island is infiltrated by Shadows — entities that create perfect physical copies of human beings by absorbing them, complete with memories, personality, emotional patterns, and relationships. The Shadows do not know they are not the people they replaced. The humans who have been replaced are gone. And the Shadows are multiplying. The ability Shinpei has — or rather, the ability that is applied to him by a Shadow who loves him enough to give him the only protection available — is to reset upon death. Each time he dies, he wakes up at a previous point with all his accumulated memories intact, building knowledge across iterations that he can apply forward. This makes Summertime Rendering, structurally, a thriller built on information cost: each loop costs Shinpei something, and he must decide what knowledge is worth obtaining at what price.

His feelings for Ushio are genuine and the series treats them as load-bearing rather than as background motivation.
