Suika

Suika is one of the earliest members of Senku's Kingdom of Science — a small child who had been compensating for severe nearsightedness with a hollowed watermelon helmet for years before the science arrived to explain and then fix what was happening, at which point her contribution to the group's work transformed alongside her understanding of herself.

Background

Suika grew up in Ishigami Village as a child regarded as a little different from the others, partly because of the watermelon shell she habitually wore over her head. The watermelon, as the series reveals when Senku and Chrome's investigations reach the question of vision, was functioning as a natural corrective lens — Suika is severely nearsighted, and the melon's geometry provided enough of a pinhole-camera effect to make the world interpretable. Before the Kingdom of Science could grind proper glass, the watermelon was the best available solution, and the social distance it accumulated was a cost she paid without being able to fully explain. When Senku demonstrates the actual mechanics of her situation and produces a proper corrective lens, the gratitude is one of the series' most quietly affecting moments: a child being seen accurately for the first time and having that accuracy offered back to her as something she can use. From that point, her scouting capability is transformed — she was already good; now she knows exactly why and what to do with it.

The series' investment in her as a character rather than as a symbol is one of Dr. Stone's most characteristic qualities.

• Senku Ishigami — the scientist who identified what was causing her difficulty and resolved it; the quality of her attachment to Senku includes both gratitude for being seen and a more general regard for someone who makes the world make more sense
• Chrome — the village's resident proto-scientist whose friendship with Suika predates the Kingdom of Science and gives her a grounding in Ishigami Village's existing social world that the newly arrived Senku does not have

Role in the Story

Suika is Dr. Stone's most personal demonstration of its central thesis — that science is not an abstract good but a practical one, measured in specific improvements to specific people's specific lives. Her arc with the corrective lens is the series' most economical statement of what all the chemistry and engineering is actually for.
