Tadashi Yamaguchi

Tadashi Yamaguchi starts as a nervous benchwarmer who can barely earn court time, and becomes Karasuno's most specialized weapon — the jump float server whose trajectory, like Yamaguchi himself, turns out to be far harder to read than it first appears.

Background

Yamaguchi and Tsukishima have been friends since childhood — Tsukishima intervened when Yamaguchi was being bullied, and the two have been inseparable since. This origin shapes their dynamic in a particular way: Yamaguchi's deference to Tsukishima is genuine, but so is the fact that he has known Tsukishima long enough to say things to him that no one else will. At Karasuno, Yamaguchi spends much of his first year as a benchwarmer. Rather than accepting this as his ceiling, he identifies the one weapon available to him — the jump float serve — and trains under Makoto Shimada, a former player who specializes in the technique. His development is the series' most explicit argument about finding a specific contribution when broad competition is not available.
