Background

In a previous life, she was a Japanese salaryman — efficient, unsentimental, and atheist to the point of philosophical rigidity. When he was pushed in front of a train by an employee he had just fired, a being who identified itself as God intervened and reincarnated him into a new world, specifically designed to force acknowledgement of divine authority. The new world is a magical analogue of early twentieth-century Europe on the verge of a continent-spanning war. The reincarnated soul arrived as an infant girl named Tanya Degurechaff in the Empire's territory — and immediately, methodically, began planning how to survive. Her strategy: perform well enough to be promoted quickly, advocate loudly enough for rear-guard positions to eventually receive one, and avoid the front line where attrition statistics become personal. The strategy has never worked. She keeps being promoted.

Tanya does not enjoy killing, does not enjoy war, and does not believe in glory or ideology — she wants a comfortable desk job and a pension, which makes her the series' most honest soldier and its most disturbing one. The gap between what she thinks and how she appears to others is where the dark comedy lives.
