Tobi

from Naruto: ShippudenFan favourite

Tobi is initially Akatsuki's least apparently threatening member — a masked figure playing the fool in an organization of killers — and the series' most sustained deception, eventually revealed as the architect of the Nine-Tails attack on Konoha and the primary force behind the Fourth Ninja World War.

Background

Obito Uchiha was Kakashi Hatake's teammate — a cheerful, compassionate genin believed killed during the Third Ninja World War when he was crushed beneath a boulder while saving Kakashi's life. He was not dead. Rescued by Madara Uchiha and sustained using Zetsu cells that replaced half his body, Obito watched from a position he could not leave as Rin Nohara — the person he loved — died at Kakashi's hand under circumstances engineered by the Hidden Mist to force the outcome. This event converted him entirely. He accepted Madara's philosophy of the Infinite Tsukuyomi and spent decades working toward its realization — operating as Tobi within Akatsuki under a false identity while maneuvering visible actors from behind them.

Powers & Abilities

AbilityWhat it does
KamuiSpace-time ninjutsu that allows him to phase through physical matter by shifting part of himself into another dimension; attacks and objects pass through him; he can teleport himself and others using the same dimensional space
Sharingan & Mangekyo SharinganProvides genjutsu access, copy capability, and the dimensional manipulation of Kamui; the Mangekyo is required for Kamui's full application
Rinnegan (controlled access)Allows the summoning and direction of the Six Paths of Pain and access to all six paths' abilities during the arc where he holds it
Zetsu Body IntegrationThe Zetsu cells in his body provide regenerative capability and unusual physical resilience well beyond a normal Uchiha

Personality

As Tobi, deliberately unfocused and comedic in a way that is clearly performance. As himself, what was a genuinely warm and idealistic person has been replaced by someone whose commitment to the Tsukuyomi plan is total — except in moments where residual feeling for Kakashi and for the people of Konoha breaks through the ideology. The series' extended examination of what happened to him is one of Shippuden's most effective sustained character studies.

Relationships

  • Kakashi Hatake — his former teammate; Kakashi's confrontations with the revealed Obito are among the series' most emotionally weighted sequences
  • Naruto Uzumaki — the person whose existence and ninja philosophy eventually reaches what remains of the person Obito was before the ideology replaced it
  • Pain — the face of Akatsuki whom Tobi positioned as the organization's public leader; their relationship is one of managed deception rather than genuine alliance

Role in the Story

Tobi is Naruto Shippuden's most elaborate structural deception — the character who reveals the gap between what the series has been showing and what was actually happening behind it for years. His arc as Obito Uchiha is one of Shippuden's most complete studies of how an idealist becomes a catastrophe, and what it might take to reverse the process.
