Tomura Shigaraki

Tomura Shigaraki is My Hero Academia's primary villain — a figure whose decay extends from his fingertips to the social structures he wants to erase, and whose origin as a neglected child exploited by All For One is one of the series' most carefully constructed tragedies.

Background

His given name is Tenko Shimura. He grew up in a home where his father actively suppressed any interest in heroes, which left him simultaneously desperate for heroism and condemned to watch it from the outside. When his Quirk manifested without warning, it killed his entire family. He was found by All For One, who recognised his potential as a symbol and raised him with deliberate cruelty disguised as mentorship — shaping Shigaraki into a weapon aimed at hero society. His hatred for the world is not merely ideological; it is visceral, grief-soaked, and entirely consistent with what was done to him. The League of Villains, later the Paranormal Liberation Front, operates as his expression of that hatred in organised form.

Personality

Erratic, obsessive, and genuinely charismatic in the way that very dangerous people can be. His relationship with the concept of "fun" is a sign of how broken his relationship with ordinary human experience became. The series makes the argument that he deserved better than what he got without endorsing what he does with it, which is a more honest position than most shōnen take on their primary antagonists.

• Izuku Midoriya — his mirror and primary opponent; the series explicitly frames them as counterpart figures shaped by the same world into opposite outcomes
• All Might — his hatred for All Might is foundational; it structures how he sees hero society as a whole
• Katsuki Bakugo — an early fixation whose capture the League prioritises; Shigaraki recognises something in Bakugo's rage that interests him

Role in the Story

Shigaraki is MHA's argument that the hero society it glorifies also produces its own worst enemies — that the system's failures are not incidental but structural, and that he is what those failures look like when given enough time.
