Background

Her fundamental magical ability is the capacity to comprehend a spell completely and then replicate it exactly. This sounds like a learning technique, but the operative word is "completely" — her comprehension is both deep and rapid in ways that most mages never develop, and the combination means that spells she has encountered and fully processed become immediately available to her at full effect. She doesn't need to study something for years; she needs to understand it once, really understand it, and then she has it. In combat, this makes her extremely difficult to deal with because her accessible range expands during an encounter as she analyzes what's being used against her. She approaches the first-class mage examination — and combat in general — with a kind of ethical minimalism: the question she asks is whether something is necessary, not whether it's permitted, and her threshold for "necessary" is calibrated to outcomes rather than to the preferences of the people in the room.
