Wakana Gojou is a boy who grew up in a traditional doll-making household, who learned to sew and craft with the patience of someone raised watching it done properly — and who has spent his school years hiding this skill because the last time he shared it, a child told him it was disgusting.

Background

Gojou was raised by his grandfather, a respected hina doll craftsman, and absorbed the workshop's rhythms and standards from early childhood. He developed genuine skill at sewing and fine handcraft, and a love for hina dolls that he understands is not typical for teenage boys. One childhood incident — sharing his interest and being rejected for it — caused him to hide this part of himself entirely through middle and high school, becoming quiet and socially withdrawn in the specific way of someone protecting something they care about. When Marin Kitagawa discovers he can sew, she responds with the opposite of mockery: pure enthusiasm about what he can do for her cosplay. This collision between his careful concealment and her complete openness about her own interests is the series' starting point.
