Yuuri Plisetsky
from Yuri!!! on ICEPopular character
Yuri Plisetsky is Russia's prodigious young figure skater — ferociously talented, genuinely hostile to almost everyone, and fighting to prove that he can win at the senior level on his own terms before anyone else decides what those terms should be.
Background
Yuri arrives in Japan demanding that Victor Nikiforov choreograph a program he promised — only to find Victor already committed to coaching Yuuri Katsuki. He enters the Grand Prix season as a senior debut, competing in a division where most newcomers spend years developing. His assignment from his coach Yakov is to skate something that showcases a quality he does not think he has. His grandfather — the only person he allows himself to be openly fond of — becomes the emotional anchor for his programs.
Skills
| Skill | What it does |
|---|---|
| Technical Jumping | Exceptional jump technique with the explosive power and rotation speed needed for quad combinations; technically the strongest jumper in his age group |
| Agility and Flexibility | Uses his young body's flexibility for step sequences and spins that older skaters cannot replicate with the same ease |
| Artistic Development | Begins the series oriented entirely toward athletic output; develops expressive range over the season that surprises everyone who assumed hostility was his only register |
Personality
Abrasive, impatient, and contemptuous of anything he reads as weakness or compromise — which initially includes most things. He is not, underneath this, a cruel person; he is a competitive one who has not yet developed the language for anything other than skating and anger. The grandfather scenes are the place where something else is visible, and the series earns considerable emotional weight from the contrast.
Relationships
- Victor Nikiforov — his idol turned competitor turned something genuinely complicated; the promise Victor made him hangs over the entire series
- Yuuri Katsuki — his primary rival for the season; his contempt for Yuuri at the start of the series is the loudest thing about him
Role in the Story
Yuri Plisetsky is Yuri on Ice's argument about what comes after natural talent — a skater so gifted that the question was never whether he could win but whether winning was sufficient. The season he learns to skate for someone other than himself, for his grandfather, is also the season he becomes genuinely dangerous as a competitor.
