7 Anime Like Frieren to Watch Next

Frieren lands because it is about time, not swords. These seven anime chase the same feeling: immortality, memory, grief and journeys that refuse to hurry.

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End key visual

Take the fantasy out of Frieren: Beyond Journey's End and the show still works, because the quest was over before episode one: the Demon King is dead, the party has scattered, and an elf stands at Himmel's funeral realising she spent ten years beside him without ever looking properly. That is the feeling these seven picks were chosen for: time, memory, grief and journeys that refuse to hurry. If you want magic schools and worldbuilding instead, our fantasy anime like Frieren and Wistoria list is the better door.

Quick answer The closest match is To Your Eternity: its immortal lead carries the same problem Frieren does, in that everyone he loves is temporary. Pick Mushishi if the pacing was the draw, or Violet Evergarden for the same emotional hit in 13 episodes.

The seven picks at a glance

3Violet Evergarden13 episodes plus two films (2018-2020)Grief written down and posted
4Natsume's Book of Friends87 episodes, 7 seasons (2008-2025)Spirits still mourning a woman who died young

7Vinland Saga48 episodes, 2 seasons (2019-2023)What you do once the quest is finished

Spoiler warning: the entries stick to premises and early episodes, except Vinland Saga, where season 2's setup gives away season 1's ending.

1. To Your Eternity: the immortal who keeps everyone he loses

Fushi arrives as a white orb, copies the rock he lands on, then takes the shape of an injured white wolf that dies on top of him. He becomes a boy only after the cheerful, nameless youth travelling with him dies of an untreated leg wound and asks not to be forgotten. The name comes later, from March, a girl who has just escaped being sacrificed by her own village and who stops to feed him fruit. The mechanic earns it the top spot: Fushi permanently keeps the forms of those who die near him and leave a strong impression, so his own body turns into a register of everyone he could not save, switchable at will. Frieren's flashbacks do that job in a gentler key. Yoshitoki Oima's manga finished in June 2025 at 25 volumes, and the anime arrived in three blocks: 20 episodes from Brain's Base in 2021, 20 from Drive in 2022-2023, and a 22-episode third season (Drive with Studio Massket) from October 2025 to March 2026 that carries the This World arc into a near-modern era. It is far crueller than Frieren about what living forever costs.

2. Mushishi: Frieren's pacing without the magic tricks

Ginko walks between mountain villages diagnosing mushi, life forms more primitive than plants or bacteria and invisible to nearly everyone. Episode 1 hands him a boy whose left-handed drawings come to life; episode 5 sends him after a swamp that travels, is now dying, and has a green-haired girl somewhere inside it. Almost every episode is self-contained, so the producers freely reordered the manga's stories; you can watch three, stop for a month and lose nothing. Episode 12, "One-Eyed Fish", explains Ginko's white hair and missing eye, and is as close as the series comes to a plot. Artland made 26 episodes under Hiroshi Nagahama in 2005-2006, added 20 more as Mushishi: Next Passage in 2014, then closed the story with the 2015 film Bell Droplets, which adapts the final arc of Yuki Urushibara's ten-volume manga. If Frieren's errand episodes were your favourite part, this is 46 of them.

3. Violet Evergarden: grief you can put in the post

Violet is a former child soldier who takes work as an Auto Memory Doll, writing letters for clients who cannot find the words themselves, and the series is really about how long a sentence outlives the person who dictated it. Mild spoiler for episode 10: a dying mother commissions 50 birthday letters so her daughter gets one a year for the next half century, which is Frieren's timescale used as a weapon. Kyoto Animation animated it under Taichi Ishidate: 13 episodes in early 2018, a special that July, the side-story film Eternity and the Auto Memory Doll in September 2019, and Violet Evergarden: The Movie a year after that. The post-war setting looks nothing like Frieren's dungeons, yet both ask whether you understand someone only once they are gone.

4. Natsume's Book of Friends: the boy mistaken for a dead woman

Takashi Natsume inherits a notebook filled with yokai names his grandmother Reiko bullied out of them, and spends seven seasons handing the names back one at a time. Reiko died young, decades before the series starts, and the spirits she bound still see her when they look at her grandson, which inverts Frieren's structure: the long-lived characters do the remembering and the human is the brief visitor. Nyanko-sensei, the rude cat-shaped spirit guarding Natsume, knew Reiko alive and never quite admits how much. Yuki Midorikawa's manga still runs, at 33 volumes as of April 2026, and the anime reaches 87 episodes: Brain's Base made the first four seasons under Takahiro Omori, Shuka the rest, with season 7 airing from October to December 2024 and a thirteenth episode held back for home video in April 2025. Two films sit between the seasons.

5. Girls' Last Tour: a journey after everything has ended

Chito and Yuuri ride a Kettenkrad, a half-track motorbike, up through the layers of a dead megacity hunting for rations, fuel and somewhere warm. In episode 3 they meet Kanazawa, a mapmaker trying to chart the whole city by hand, and then the improvised lift the three of them are riding tilts and drops his entire bag of maps into the dark. He jumps after it and they haul him back. Yuuri talks him out of quitting, he hands them his camera and leaves to draw the lot again. That scene answers the question Frieren keeps circling: what a journey is worth when it changes nothing. White Fox made 12 episodes under Takaharu Ozaki in late 2017, covering roughly the first two thirds of Tsukumizu's six-volume manga, so the ending exists only in print. Tsukumizu returned to the setting in June 2026 with a prologue manga, Kaiso Toshi Danpen-Shu.

6. Somali and the Forest Spirit: a guardian counting down

A golem working as a forest warden finds a small human girl in a world where humans are hunted to the edge of extinction, and she immediately starts calling him Dad. He is built to last a thousand years and has a little over one of them left, so the journey comes with a deadline: find other humans, and ideally her family, before he stops working. Frieren has too much time and no idea what to do with it; the golem has a fixed shutdown date and a very clear job. Satelight and Hornets made 12 gentle episodes in early 2020, and the pleasure is in the errands. In episode 2 Somali is hurt and an oni named Shizuno treats her, after which the golem asks to be taught medicine-making so he can do it himself next time. Later they reach a city full of non-humans, run short of money, and he takes work in a restaurant while Somali makes friends with the owners' child. Fair warning: Yako Gureishi's manga was closed out early in December 2020 because of the author's health, six volumes in, so neither version reaches the ending it was heading for.

7. Vinland Saga: what a warrior does when the quest is over

This is the outlier on tone: season 1 is a blood-soaked Viking revenge story, not a reflective one. Stay with it, because season 2 is the closest anime has come to Frieren's actual subject. Thorfinn ends up a slave clearing forest on Ketil's farm in southern Denmark beside a fellow slave, Einar, and for most of 24 episodes the drama is tree stumps, grain prices and a man working out whether he is allowed to want a quiet life after what he did. Wit Studio animated the first 24 episodes of Vinland Saga in 2019 and MAPPA the next 24 in 2023, with Shuhei Yabuta directing both. As of September 2026 no third season has been officially announced, which leaves the Eastern Expedition arc that follows the farm in print only: Makoto Yukimura finished the manga on 25 July 2025 at 29 volumes. Our Vinland Saga characters guide helps if the cast list looks daunting.

How to choose your next watch

If the pacing was the draw

Mushishi or Girls' Last Tour. Neither has a plot you can fall behind on: Mushishi resets every episode, and Girls' Last Tour is twelve half-hours of two girls looking for fuel. Start Mushishi on episode 1 or episode 5 and it makes no difference.

If you came to cry

Violet Evergarden first, because episode 10 arrives early and lands hard, then To Your Eternity once you have recovered, because it does the same thing for 62 episodes. Our saddest anime round-up goes further.

If it was the mismatched lifespans

To Your Eternity, Natsume's Book of Friends and Somali all run on clocks that do not line up: an immortal, spirits outliving the humans they liked, a guardian with a year left.

What to know before you start

Do not open Violet Evergarden with Recollections, the 95-minute recap film from 2021: it compresses the standalone client jobs that build Violet into a person, and those are most of the point.

Mushishi's order is flexible by design, but keep the two blocks in sequence and save Bell Droplets for last, since it adapts the manga's ending. Girls' Last Tour and Somali both stop short of their manga, and only Girls' Last Tour has a finished ending to read, in volumes 5 and 6.

Natsume's 87 episodes look worse than they are. The seasons run 11 to 13 episodes each and every one ends cleanly, so stopping after season 4 (the last Brain's Base run) is a legitimate place to leave it. The two films slot in after season 6, before the 2024 revival.

Where Frieren itself goes next

Season 1 ran 28 episodes from September 2023 to March 2024, directed by Keiichiro Saito at Madhouse. Season 2 was much shorter, 10 episodes between 16 January and 27 March 2026, with Tomoya Kitagawa taking over as director and Fern and Stark still pushing north towards Ende. A third season was confirmed the day that finale aired, set for October 2027 and adapting the Golden Land arc. Reading ahead is harder than it sounds: Kanehito Yamada and Tsukasa Abe's manga reached 15 volumes by December 2025 and has been on indefinite hiatus since October 2025 while both creators deal with their health. Our Frieren watch order guide sorts the seasons, shorts and specials before a rewatch.

Key takeaways

  • To Your Eternity is the closest thematic match: an immortal lead who outlives everyone.
  • Mushishi and Girls' Last Tour match Frieren's pace; Violet Evergarden lands the emotional hit in 13 episodes.
  • Vinland Saga is odd on tone, but season 2 is about life after the quest, Frieren's core subject.
  • Frieren season 3 arrives in October 2027 and the manga is on hiatus, so there is no quick catch-up read.

Frequently Asked Questions

What anime is most like Frieren: Beyond Journey's End?

To Your Eternity. Its lead, Fushi, cannot die and permanently keeps the forms of the people and creatures he loses, so it shares Frieren's preoccupation with mortality seen from outside. If you mean the pacing rather than the theme, Mushishi is the closer answer.

Is there an anime with the same slow pace as Frieren?

Mushishi is the usual answer: 26 self-contained episodes about a travelling specialist solving small supernatural problems, plus a 20-episode continuation and a 2015 film. Girls' Last Tour is the other, 12 episodes of two girls driving through ruins.

When is Frieren season 3 coming out?

October 2027. It was announced on 27 March 2026, the day season 2's tenth and final episode aired, and it adapts the Golden Land arc, trailed by a visual of Macht of the Golden Land. As of September 2026 the staff and studio have not been confirmed, though Madhouse animated both earlier seasons.

Which anime like Frieren is the shortest?

Girls' Last Tour and Somali and the Forest Spirit are 12 episodes each, and Violet Evergarden's television run is 13. Violet Evergarden is the only one of the three that finishes its story on screen, and it needs the 2020 film to get there. The other two stop short of their manga.

Is Violet Evergarden actually similar to Frieren?

Thematically, yes: both follow someone who struggles to read other people, and both measure time through letters, keepsakes and graves. The texture differs. Violet Evergarden is a post-war drama of standalone client stories, with no adventuring party, and it is far more openly tearful.

Should I watch Vinland Saga if I only liked Frieren's quiet episodes?

Yes, but know what you are signing up for. Season 1 is a violent revenge story; season 2 spends 24 episodes on farm labour, guilt and a man trying to build a life without killing anyone. Skipping ahead robs the farm of its weight, so start at the beginning.
