The 12 Strongest Hunter x Hunter Characters, Ranked
From Meruem to the Zoldyck assassins, here are the strongest Hunter x Hunter characters, ranked by Nen mastery and feats.
Power in Hunter x Hunter doesn't work like other shonen — a "weaker" fighter with the right Nen conditions can execute a stronger one, and the single mightiest being in the story was beaten by a bomb and a vow rather than a bigger punch. So this ranking weighs three things: raw output, Nen mastery, and demonstrated feats (with reputation noted where Togashi has deliberately kept cards hidden). Twelve names from the 2011 anime's timeline, honestly argued.
Quick answer Meruem is the strongest being in Hunter x Hunter, full stop. Adult Gon was the one entity that dwarfed even the Royal Guards — at the cost of everything. Among normal humans, prime Netero stood at the summit.
The ranking at a glance
| Rank | Character | Nen type | Claim to the spot |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Meruem | Specialist | Absorbed power, perfect adaptation, no equal |
| 2 | Adult Gon | Enhancer | Erased Neferpitou; power "beyond Meruem" per Pitou's dread |
| 3 | Isaac Netero | Enhancer | 100-Type Guanyin Bodhisattva; strongest human of his era |
| 4 | Neferpitou | Specialist | Royal Guard; terrified Kite and prime-fear Netero |
| 5 | Menthuthuyoupi | Enhancer | Raw-power Guard; tanked an army of top Hunters |
| 6 | Shaiapouf | Manipulator | The Guard whose scheming nearly won the war |
| 7 | Ging Freecss | Unknown | Top-5 Nen user by reputation (Netero's own hint) |
| 8 | Chrollo Lucilfer | Specialist | Skill Hunter arsenal; killed Hisoka with preparation |
| 9 | Hisoka | Transmuter | Fights up a weight class for fun |
| 10 | Zeno Zoldyck | Transmuter | Dragon-riding elder assassin; pushed Chrollo 2-on-1 |
| 11 | Silva Zoldyck | Transmuter | Zoldyck patriarch; traded blows with Chrollo and survived a Guard |
| 12 | Killua | Transmuter | Godspeed — the fastest rising talent in the series |
1. Meruem — the born king
The Chimera Ant King is Togashi's thesis on power: born stronger than everything, and then he learns. Meruem absorbs abilities by consuming Nen users, adapts to strategies mid-fight, and — the truly frightening part — grows intellectually faster than physically, going from tyrant to philosopher over a handful of Gungi games with Komugi. Netero, the strongest human alive, hit him with his ultimate technique thousands of times and drew barely more than irritation. Nothing in the story beats Meruem in combat; that's precisely why the story doesn't try.
2. Adult Gon — the one-time miracle
Gon's transformation above Peijin is the series' most haunting image of power: a vow so extreme — all of his potential, all at once, everything he would ever become — that it aged him into the fighter he might have been decades later. Neferpitou, a Royal Guard who casually dismembered top Hunters, looked at him and felt only despair, judging the transformation a threat to the King himself. It obliterated Pitou and cost Gon his Nen entirely. We rank it #2 because it existed once, at maximum price — the ultimate expression of the vow-and-limitation system our Nen explainer breaks down.
3. Isaac Netero — humanity's ceiling
The Chairman's 100-Type Guanyin Bodhisattva — a praying warrior-god born of gratitude, striking faster than Meruem could initially react — is the most beautiful ability in the series. Even past his prime, Netero fought the King alone for hours; his final move, the Poor Man's Rose, is the story's darkest statement: humanity's real trump card was never Nen at all. In his prime, by his own era's reputation, no human matched him.
4–6. The Royal Guards — Pitou, Youpi, Pouf
Neferpitou tops the Guard trio: En spanning kilometres, puppet-necromancy (Terpsichora), and a doctor-ability with battlefield utility — plus the psychological weight of being the thing that broke both Kite and Gon. Menthuthuyoupi is pure output — a rage-transforming mountain of aura that a coordinated squad of elite Hunters (Knuckle, Shoot, Morel, Meleoron) could only delay, never kill. Shaiapouf ranks below on force but nearly won the entire war through manipulation, body-splitting espionage and cold-blooded scheming. Any of the three would headline a lesser series.
7. Ging Freecss — ranked on reputation
Togashi has deliberately never shown Ging fight seriously — we rank him here because Netero himself is implied to consider Ging among the handful of top Nen users alive, other elite Hunters treat him with wary reverence, and his casual displays (copying attacks after being hit once) hint at an ability built for versatility. The most argued entry on this list, by design.
8–9. Chrollo and Hisoka — the duellists
Chrollo Lucilfer is what preparation looks like as a superpower: Skill Hunter lets him steal abilities (under strict, contractual conditions), and the Heavens Arena fight shows the payoff — a stage rigged with layered stolen Nen that reduced Hisoka, the series' most gifted duellist, to a corpse. Hisoka still ranks a hair below his killer precisely because that loss was to stacked conditions, not talent: with Bungee Gum's versatility and a genius for reading opponents, Hisoka fights above his weight class recreationally — and his post-mortem revival vow promises the rematch.
10–12. Zeno, Silva and Killua — the Zoldyck line
Zeno, the grandfather, pressured Chrollo in a two-on-one alongside Silva and remains one of the few people Netero treated as a peer conversation partner. Silva, the patriarch, has survived encounters that kill elite Hunters, including battling a Royal Guard. And Killua closes the list as the future: Godspeed — electricity-fuelled automatic reflexes — plus assassin training and the sharpest tactical brain of the young cast. Give him a decade and this whole ranking rearranges around him.
Key takeaways
- Meruem is untouchable; only Adult Gon's everything-for-power vow exceeded the Guard tier.
- Netero proved humanity competes through mastery and sacrifice, not raw aura.
- Nen conditions beat stats: Chrollo killing Hisoka is the system working exactly as designed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who is the strongest Hunter x Hunter character?
Meruem, the Chimera Ant King — the strongest human, Netero, needed a nuclear weapon rather than Nen to stop him.
Is Adult Gon stronger than Meruem?
The story implies the transformation's power was at least Guard-annihilating, and Pitou feared it could threaten the King — but the two never fought, so #2 with an asterisk is the honest answer.
Who is stronger, Hisoka or Chrollo?
Chrollo won their actual fight at Heavens Arena through layered preparation. On even terms most fans favour Hisoka — which is exactly the argument Togashi wrote the fight to start.
How strong is Ging really?
Unrevealed by design. His placement rests on Netero-level reputation and glimpses of an ability that copies techniques — Togashi is saving the reveal.
Where does Killua's Godspeed rank?
Among the fastest techniques in the series — but Killua is still growing. His ceiling, like Gon's, is the series' open question.
