Top 10 Strongest Tokyo Ghoul Characters, Ranked

Ranking Tokyo Ghoul by strength is harder than it looks, because the series keeps moving its goalposts. A ghoul who terrifies the CCG in one arc is farmed for spare parts in the next, and the investigators fight with weapons grown from ghouls they already killed. These ten are ranked on page feats across the original manga and Tokyo Ghoul:re. Heavy spoilers follow.

How we ranked them

Three things decide a placement: clean results, meaning who beat whom and under what conditions; what the body can do, since kagune type, kakuja development and regeneration settle more fights than aggression; and what the rest of the cast has to organise to survive someone. We ignore the CCG's own scale, whose C to SSS ratings grade activity and influence alongside raw strength.

Spoiler warning: everything below assumes you have finished both the original series and :re, including the ending.

1. Ken Kaneki: the boy who became a disaster

Ken Kaneki collects names the way everyone else collects scars: Eyepatch, Centipede, Haise Sasaki, Black Reaper, One-Eyed King, Dragon. Centipede arrives with the cannibalism that makes him a half-kakuja, the new kagune shaped like the centipede Yamori pushed into his ear. Black Reaper he earns at the Tsukiyama Family Extermination Operation, driving the One-Eyed Owl off single-handed and taking a promotion to Associate Special Class. The ceiling comes at the end of :re: Suzuya's side has already taken all four limbs by the time he swallows the Oggai squad, each carrying a piece of Rize's kakuhou, plus a core cut out of Furuta. What erupts from the 24th ward is the Dragon, and nobody else here forces an evacuation.

2. Kishou Arima: the record only Kaneki broke

Kishou Arima spent eighteen years in the CCG without losing once. He rotated through three quinques: IXA, a koukaku lance that folds into a shield; Narukami, an ukaku rapier whose panels fire homing Rc-cell bolts; and the Owl, the only SSS-rated quinque in the series. The original manga ends with him in Route V14, the tunnel under the 20th ward, driving IXA through Kaneki's skull. Then the reveal reframes him: a half-human bred in the Sunlit Garden, ageing too fast and going blind from glaucoma, and the One-Eyed King the ghouls had waited for, quietly working with Eto on a successor. Offered his life after losing at Cochlea, Arima cut his own throat and made Kaneki take the credit.

3. Eto Yoshimura: the real One-Eyed Owl

Eto is the rarest thing in the setting, a one-eyed ghoul born rather than surgically made: daughter of Kuzen Yoshimura and Ukina, a journalist digging into V whom Kuzen was ordered to kill. Her kakuja is a mask-like head with four horns and a single eye, and the CCG files her at SSS. She built Aogiri Tree while living a second life as Sen Takatsuki, the horror novelist whose books happen to be Kaneki's favourites. Beaten by him at the Tsukiyama operation, she surrendered and announced on live television that she was a ghoul. She got loose again during the Cochlea breach, Furuta beat her there, and what he made of the body, the Taxidermied Owl worn by Donato Porpora, is the series' grimmest idea.

4. Kichimura Washuu: the man who beat Eto

Nimura Furuta spends most of :re playing a clownish Rank 1 investigator, and the joke costs the entire cast. He was the illegitimate son of CCG chairman Tsuneyoshi Washuu, raised in the same Sunlit Garden as Arima and trained as a V agent, and he was Kanou's assistant before he was Kanou's patient: he carries Rize's kagune himself, the organ that made Kaneki. He killed his father with the Clowns at his back, took the CCG's top chair as Kichimura, kept Rize captive to mass-produce the Oggai from her kakuhou, and beat Eto at Cochlea. He earns his place among the greatest anime villains, and his ceiling is the ending, where Kaneki catches him inside the Dragon he built.

5. Kuzen Yoshimura: the Non-Killing Owl

Anteiku's manager is the gentlest character here and, on paper, among the most dangerous. He was an assassin for V under the name Kuzen and walked away when his daughter was born, then spent years absorbing her reputation as the Owl without killing a single investigator, which is how the CCG renamed him the Non-Killing Owl. Two harvests came out of that body. Thirteen years before :re, a young Arima tore a kakuhou out of him, and the Commission built the Owl from it: the first quinque ever made from a living ghoul, the only one graded SSS, unused until Arima drew it on Kaneki, who destroyed it. Eto later overwhelmed her father at the Owl Suppression Operation, and his body went to Dr Kanou, whose Owl-series experiments produced the ghouls ranked six and nine.

6. Seidou Takizawa: the biggest jump in the series

No character travels further from a worse starting point. Takizawa is a Rank 2 investigator with a chip on his shoulder and nothing behind it, and Aogiri takes him during the Owl Suppression Operation and leaves him listed as killed in action. He returns rebuilt around Kuzen's kakuhou, with an ukaku kagune and very little mind: Kanou ran sixty-three investigators through that process and counted one success, and Takizawa is it. On Rushima, Tatara has Houji cornered when Takizawa turns on his own commander and runs him through. Then he stands before the CCG expecting to be welcomed home. Houji, in tears, orders his battalion to put him down as a last mercy. Takizawa cuts the troops apart and beheads him. Akira Mado, his old colleague, later brings him into Goat.

7. Tatara: the tongue of flame

Aogiri's second in command came out of Chi She Lian, a ghoul organisation in China, and he runs the Tree's field operations with none of Eto's theatre. Most of the time he does not fight. When he does, his kakuja unfolds into something like a salamander with a triangular head, and the concentrated Rc cells it vents ignite: heat measured in thousands of degrees that Akira Mado calls a tongue of flame. No other ghoul in the series is shown doing anything close. One name cracks the blank expression: Kousuke Houji helped destroy Chi She Lian and killed Tatara's brother, and it is with that grudge within reach on Rushima that his own subordinate ends him.

8. Juuzou Suzuya: the best human fighter left

Remove the half-humans and hybrids and Juuzou Suzuya is the most dangerous ordinary person alive. He was raised as a plaything by the SS-rated ghoul Big Madam and reached Special Class at 22, the first investigator to manage it that young since Arima, which is why Furuta later calls him the next one. His loadout is deliberately unpleasant: 13's Jason, a rinkaku scythe grown from Yamori's kakuhou, and Scorpion 1/56, small bikaku knives he throws as readily as he swings, some kept in his prosthetic leg. He walked into the auction disguised as a woman, cut Big Madam down and left the squad to finish her. Later, in Arata armour alongside Hanbee Abara, he takes Kaneki apart until the One-Eyed King wakes with no limbs.

9. Koutarou Amon: the failed experiment nobody could file away

Amon's whole arc is a refusal to accept being outmatched. He grew up in an orphanage run by the priest Donato Porpora, who turned out to be eating the children, and he lost to Kaneki twice as a human, giving up an arm the second time. Declared killed in action after facing Tatara alongside Takizawa at the Owl Suppression Operation, he was posthumously promoted two ranks to Special Class. What had actually happened is that Kanou got him, and Amon was not the one success in that batch of sixty-three: he was a floppy, Kanou's word for a subject that never developed fast enough. He still grows an ukaku kakuja, and late in :re, with Donato loose from Cochlea and driving the Taxidermied Owl, it is Amon, by then fighting with Goat, who kills the ghoul who raised him.

10. Noro: the thing that would not stay dead

Noro barely speaks, eats constantly and works as a wall Aogiri parks in front of the CCG, which makes him the one entry ranked on durability, not output. At the Tsukiyama operation a Nutcracker quinque blew him into four pieces and Shinji Michibata put a blade through the head; the lower half then stood up, opened its kakuja and skewered nearly every investigator still standing. Ginshi Shirazu bombarded it with his own kagune until he had nothing left, took the impaling that killed him, and shouted for Kuki Urie to finish it. The autopsy is worse than the mystery. Noro had never been alive: a corpse, once Eto's guardian, worked by a detached piece of her kagune, which the CCG forged into Ginkui, the quinque Urie carried afterwards.

Who just missed the top 10

Touka Kirishima is the popular omission: her ukaku kagune throws lightning, but the series never hands her a result against the tier above. Her brother Ayato Kirishima gets closer, the youngest executive Aogiri ever promoted, who took the Black Rabbit name to stop the CCG filing his kills under his sister's alias, Rabbit. The sleeper pick is Uta, the mask maker the CCG calls No Face: a Clown with duplicating tail kagune, extraordinary regeneration, and shapeshifting good enough to wear another person's face.

Why the anime will not show you half of this

If you only know the anime, some placements will look odd. Studio Pierrot's first season (twelve episodes, 4 July to 19 September 2014) is a fair adaptation. Tokyo Ghoul root A (twelve episodes, January to March 2015) then takes an anime-original route that rearranges the Aogiri and Anteiku material. Tokyo Ghoul:re had twenty-four episodes across two 2018 cours to cover sixteen volumes, so Rushima, the Cochlea raids and the Dragon finale are compressed until the feats stop reading. Everything above comes from the manga: 143 chapters for Tokyo Ghoul, 179 for :re.
