Sword Art Online key visual

Fourteen years after its TV debut, Sword Art Online spans three TV seasons, a two-season spin-off, three films, a year-end special and a 2026 side story tied to a video game, with a fourth film on the way. The path you actually need is much shorter. Here is the order we recommend, what each entry covers, what to skip, and how chronological order differs, checked against everything announced up to September 2026.

Quick answer Watch in release order: Sword Art Online (2012), Sword Art Online II (2014), the Ordinal Scale film (2017), then Alicization (2018-2019) and Alicization: War of Underworld (2019-2020). Add the two Progressive films after Season 1, and treat Gun Gale Online Alternative, Extra Edition and the recap specials as optional.

Step 1: Sword Art Online Season 1 (2012)

Everything starts here. A-1 Pictures adapted Reki Kawahara's light novels under director Tomohiko Ito, with Yuki Kajiura on the score. Episodes 1-14 are Aincrad: 10,000 players log into a new virtual reality MMO, find the logout button gone, and learn from creator Akihiko Kayaba that dying in the game now means dying for real. The only exit is clearing all 100 floors. Kirito is the solo-player lead, and Asuna becomes the partner who anchors the whole franchise.

If Aincrad feels like it skips ahead, that is deliberate. The arc leaps months at a time and pauses for side stories, such as Sachi's small guild in episode 3 and Silica's bid to revive her pet dragon in episode 4, so two years pass as a set of snapshots.

Episodes 15-25 are Fairy Dance. Asuna has not woken up, and the trail leads Kirito into ALfheim Online (ALO), a flight-based fairy game where his sister Suguha plays as Leafa. It is the arc people complain about most, with a one-note villain and Asuna stuck as a captive, but do not skip it: ALO is the home base for two later arcs, and Leafa joins the core cast here.

Optional stop: Extra Edition (2013)

Aired on 31 December 2013, Extra Edition is mostly a Season 1 recap, framed by new scenes: a government official quizzes Kirito about Aincrad while the girls teach Suguha to swim at the school pool. The final 20 minutes or so are a fresh story. Yui, the AI girl Kirito and Asuna adopt in Aincrad, wants to see a whale, so the group takes on an undersea temple quest in ALO. Watch that last stretch between Season 1 and SAO II, or skip the lot.

Step 2: Sword Art Online II (2014)

Season 2 packs three arcs into 24 episodes. Phantom Bullet (episodes 1-14) sends Kirito into Gun Gale Online, a post-apocalyptic shooter, after government official Seijiro Kikuoka asks him to investigate Death Gun, a player whose in-game shots seem to kill people in reality. Kirito teams up with Sinon (Shino Asada), a sniper wrestling with her own trauma, in the Bullet of Bullets tournament, and the case drags up Aincrad memories Kirito has tried hard to bury.

Calibur (episodes 15-17) is a breather in which the friends hunt the holy sword Excalibur in ALO's frozen Jotunheimr. Mother's Rosario (episodes 18-24) hands the show to Asuna, who meets Yuuki Konno, an unbeaten duellist leading a small guild called the Sleeping Knights. For many fans, us included, it is the emotional peak of the TV run. The mid-season recap special, Debriefing, is skippable.

Step 3: Ordinal Scale (2017)

Ordinal Scale is an original story by Kawahara, directed by Ito and released in Japan on 18 February 2017. Set a few weeks after Mother's Rosario, it swaps full-dive virtual reality for the Augma, an augmented reality device that lays a game over the real world. Players fight old Aincrad floor bosses in the streets, an AI idol called Yuna performs at events, and a top-ranked player named Eiji clearly has an agenda. Alicization does not strictly need it, but the plot hinges on memories of Aincrad and it is the last full friend-group adventure before Alicization pulls Kirito away for most of its run, so slot it in before Step 4.

Step 4: Alicization and War of Underworld (2018-2020)

Treat these as one 47-episode story adapting light novel volumes 9-18, directed by Manabu Ono. Alicization (24 episodes, October 2018 to March 2019) opens with a one-hour episode: after an attack in the real world, Kirito wakes in the Underworld, a simulated fantasy world that a secretive research organisation called Rath reaches through its Soul Translator machine. He befriends Eugeo, and the pair head for the Axiom Church's Central Cathedral to find Alice, Eugeo's childhood friend, taken years earlier by the Integrity Knights. The village and academy episodes are slow on purpose; the Cathedral climb is the payoff.

War of Underworld (23 episodes) aired in two halves: 12 episodes from October to December 2019, then 11 more that the pandemic pushed from April to July-September 2020. It turns the story into a full-scale war and brings Asuna, Sinon and Leafa into the Underworld on super-accounts styled after its creation goddesses. Skip the three recaps (Recollection, Reflection and Reminiscence) unless you took a long break, in which case Reflection, which aired a week before War of Underworld, is a handy refresher.

Where the Progressive films fit

Progressive is Kawahara's floor-by-floor retelling of Aincrad, and the films adapt it with Asuna as the lead. Aria of a Starless Night (Japan, October 2021; 97 minutes; directed by Ayako Kono) covers the first floor: Asuna's early weeks, her friend Mito (a character created for the films), meeting Kirito, and the raid on Illfang the Kobold Lord. Scherzo of Deep Night (Japan, October 2022; North America, February 2023) jumps to the fifth floor, where the two leading raid guilds, the ALS and the DKB, feud over strategy while Kirito and Asuna find signs of an organised player-killing group.

Watch them after Season 1, not before. They stop at floor five, so starting there leaves 95 floors unshown, and much of their tension comes from knowing where the leads end up. They also revisit the first-floor boss fight from Season 1's episode 2 with different details, which plays best as a fresh angle on something you know. As of September 2026 no third Progressive film has been announced.

Gun Gale Online Alternative: take it or leave it

Written by Keiichi Sigsawa (Kino's Journey) under Kawahara's supervision, this spin-off follows Karen Kohiruimaki, a university student self-conscious about being 183 cm tall, who plays GGO as LLENN, a tiny avatar dressed in pink, and ends up in a team battle royale called Squad Jam. Kirito and friends do not appear. Season 1 (12 episodes, 2018, Studio 3Hz) covers the first two Squad Jams; Season 2 (12 episodes, late 2024, A-1 Pictures) covers the third plus a test-play event against experimental AI enemies. It is lighter and more tactical than the main series, ideal if Phantom Bullet's gunfights were your favourite part, and best watched after SAO II. We found no announcement of a third season as of September 2026.

Release order vs chronological order

In-universe, the story runs like this:

  1. Progressive: Aria of a Starless Night (first floor, the game's first month)
  2. Progressive: Scherzo of Deep Night (fifth floor, later that December)
  3. Season 1, episodes 1-14 (the full two years of Aincrad)
  4. Season 1, episodes 15-25 (Fairy Dance), then Extra Edition
  5. Sword Art Online II
  6. Ordinal Scale
  7. Alicization and War of Underworld

Gun Gale Online Alternative runs alongside the main story after Phantom Bullet, and Unanswered//butterfly is set inside the Aincrad death game. The catch is overlap: Season 1 covers the same opening weeks and then runs far past them, so a strict timeline shows you the first-floor boss fight twice. Release order avoids that, which is why we save chronological order for rewatches.

What you can safely skip

  • The four recap specials: Debriefing (SAO II) plus Recollection, Reflection and Reminiscence (Alicization).
  • Extra Edition: unless you want its 20 new minutes.
  • Gun Gale Online Alternative: if you only care about Kirito and Asuna.
  • Sword Art Offline: the chibi comedy shorts (nine per season) bundled with the Season 1 and SAO II Blu-ray and DVD releases, which replay scenes as a spoof news show.
  • Unanswered//butterfly: fun for Aincrad fans, but it changes nothing in the main story.

Do not skip Fairy Dance, Calibur (three episodes, and the best look at the friends simply hanging out) or Ordinal Scale.

What is new in 2026, and what comes next

Unanswered//butterfly is a roughly 110-minute CG special from Polygon Pictures, directed by Tadahiro Yoshihira and supervised by Kawahara. Two original players trapped in Aincrad lose comrades, set out after a mysterious player killer called the Black Swordsman, and train under Asuna. It was made to promote Echoes of Aincrad, Bandai Namco's action RPG released in July 2026. Apart from limited-time streams and previews, the full special has been tied to premium editions of the game, and we could not confirm a regular streaming release as of September 2026.

Sword Art Online -Integral Domain- got its title and a 2028 release window in July 2026. It is an original story by Kawahara set after Alicization, directed by Shingo Adachi (the TV series' long-time character designer) at A-1 Pictures and Psyde Kick Studio, with Yoshitsugu Matsuoka and Haruka Tomatsu returning as Kirito and Asuna. No fourth TV season has been announced.

Where the story continues after the anime

War of Underworld ends at light novel volume 18. Volumes 19-20, Moon Cradle, are a side story set before the end of Alicization, and volume 21 begins Unital Ring, the first main arc Kawahara wrote from scratch rather than from his original web novel. Unital Ring has a manga adaptation but no announced anime, so the novels are where to go for more Kirito before 2028.

Prefer anime? Log Horizon strands its players in an MMO and makes them build a working society, and Overlord follows a player who stays logged in as his favourite game shuts down. Our best isekai anime ranking has more, and our Re:Zero watch order untangles another multi-season fantasy series.

Frequently Asked Questions

What order should I watch Sword Art Online in?

Watch in release order: Sword Art Online (2012), Sword Art Online II (2014), the film Ordinal Scale (2017), Alicization (2018-2019) and War of Underworld (2019-2020). The Progressive films are best after Season 1, and the Gun Gale Online Alternative spin-off after SAO II.

How many seasons of Sword Art Online are there?

There are three main TV seasons: Sword Art Online (25 episodes), Sword Art Online II (24) and Alicization (47 across Alicization and War of Underworld), 96 episodes in total. The Gun Gale Online Alternative spin-off adds two 12-episode seasons from 2018 and 2024.

Should I watch SAO Progressive before Season 1?

We recommend Season 1 first. The Progressive films retell only the first and fifth floors of Aincrad from Asuna's point of view, leaving most of the death game untold, and they land harder once you know the characters.

Do I need to watch Ordinal Scale before Alicization?

It is not strictly required, but it is canon and strongly recommended. The film is an original story by creator Reki Kawahara, set a few weeks after Season 2's Mother's Rosario arc, and it is the last adventure with the full friend group before Alicization.

Is there a Sword Art Online season 4?

As of September 2026, no fourth TV season has been announced. The next confirmed anime is the original film Sword Art Online -Integral Domain-, set after Alicization and due in 2028.

How long does it take to watch all of Sword Art Online?

The 96 main episodes take about 38-39 hours at roughly 24 minutes each, and the three released films add about five and a quarter hours, so budget around 44 hours. Gun Gale Online Alternative adds roughly nine and a half hours.
