Komi Can't Communicate is a school comedy anime about the gap between how people look and how they feel, adapted from Tomohito Oda's manga, which ran in Shogakukan's Weekly Shonen Sunday from 2016 to January 2025 and finished at 37 volumes. Their first real conversation happens in chalk on a blackboard, and out of it comes her goal of making 100 friends. Tadano decides to help, starting with the relentlessly sociable Najimi Osana, who claims to have been childhood friends with practically everyone.

The anime's best trick is how it handles a lead who barely talks. Aoi Koga voices Komi with tiny sounds and breaths, and the show fills the silence with visual gags, notebook exchanges and quiet scenes where a single written line carries the punchline. The weakness is the supporting cast: many classmates are built on one exaggerated quirk, and the short vignette structure can make a run of episodes feel repetitive. Komi's anxiety, though, is treated with real warmth rather than as the butt of the joke.

OLM animated both seasons, with Ayumu Watanabe as chief director and Kazuki Kawagoe directing. Season one aired from October to December 2021 and Part 2 from April to June 2022, 12 episodes each, and Netflix streams both outside Japan. No third season had been announced as of October 2026, so the anime covers only the early stretch of a long manga, and the books are where the rest of Komi and Tadano's story lives.

It suits viewers who want gentle, low-stakes comedy with a slow-burn romance underneath, and it earns a place on our list of the best romance anime of all time as the softest pick there.
