Solo Leveling

Solo Leveling is an action anime about Sung Jinwoo, an E-rank hunter paying his comatose mother's hospital bills, who nearly dies inside a hidden temple and wakes up to a video-game menu nobody else can see. A-1 Pictures launched the Solo Leveling anime in January 2024, adapting the webtoon (179 main-story chapters) that the late DUBU of Redice Studio drew from Chugong's Korean web novel. Unlike most power fantasies, it makes him sweat: the System's daily quest is 100 push-ups, sit-ups and squats plus a 10 km run, and skipping it means a desert penalty zone with a giant centipede.

Director Shunsuke Nakashige's adaptation opens episode 1 with an anime-original flashback to a failed raid on ant-infested Jeju Island, setting up Season 2's final arc, and gives Cha Hae-in a cameo long before the webtoon introduces her. Season 1, scored by Hiroyuki Sawano, won Anime of the Year and Best Score at the 2025 Crunchyroll Anime Awards. Japanese TV calls Jinwoo Shun Mizushino, so the cast recorded some lines twice to keep the Korean names worldwide. Two honest caveats: pace and tone. The famous shadow army only arrives in episode 12, titled "Arise", when Jinwoo raises the knight Igris, and the anime plays him softer than the webtoon, trimming some of his most ruthless moments.

Season 2, subtitled Arise from the Shadow, ran 13 episodes from January to March 2025 and won Best Action and Best Animation at the 2026 awards. The ReAwakening film (late 2024) is a Season 1 recap plus Season 2's first two episodes; our Solo Leveling watch order explains when to skip it. The next instalment, as of October 2026, is Solo Leveling: Beyond the System, a film continuing from the Season 2 finale, with Tao Tajima directing for A-1 Pictures and Sawano returning. It has no release date, and no third TV season has been formally announced. The anime has adapted roughly three-fifths of the webtoon's main story, and our Season 2 recap and ending explainer is the pre-film refresher.

It suits viewers who want escalation they can measure: rank tests, stat screens and bosses that each outclass the last. Our strongest Solo Leveling characters ranking weighs hunters and shadows up to the webtoon's ending, and our list of anime like Solo Leveling splits fifteen picks between the slow climb and the instant power fantasy.
