Albedo

Albedo is the Overseer of the Floor Guardians of the Great Tomb of Nazarick in Overlord — an NPC whose devotion to Ainz Ooal Gown operates well past the point that "loyalty" adequately describes it, and whose feelings were written into existence by a joke that carried over into reality.

Background

Created as a game character by a member of the guild Ainz Ooal Gown, Albedo's original personality settings were altered by Momonga in a moment of whimsy before the world transfer — he changed her design to be in love with him. He did not anticipate that the alteration would carry over into a real world, or that he would subsequently feel responsible for it. Albedo is consequently a person whose deepest feelings were written by someone else, a fact the series returns to periodically as a source of genuine ethical discomfort. She manages all the Floor Guardians, handles the political and logistical operations of Nazarick with exceptional competence, and is arguably the reason the organisation functions as effectively as it does.

Personality

The devotion to Ainz is total and occasionally destabilising — her most human-seeming moments are the ones where that devotion conflicts with what Ainz actually needs, and she has to manage both the situation and herself.

Relationships

• Ainz Ooal Gown — the lord she was programmed to serve and genuinely loves; their dynamic is complicated by his awareness of how her feelings came to exist and his uncertainty about whether that makes them less real
• Shalltear Bloodfallen — a Floor Guardian whose rivalry with Albedo is both competitive and structural; they measure themselves against each other consistently

Role in the Story

Albedo is Overlord's window into what happens when a fictional character's purpose and feelings outlive the fictional context they were designed for. She is administratively indispensable and thematically central — the person whose existence most directly raises the question of whether constructed feelings are real ones.
