Momonga

Momonga — who comes to be known as Ainz Ooal Gown — is the undead sorcerer king at the centre of Overlord: a former office worker whose transfer into a virtual world he once played in has made him the most powerful entity in it, and whose primary anxiety is that nobody can find out.

Background

In his previous life, the man known as Momonga played the DMMORPG YGGDRASIL as a skeletal lich, building the guild Ainz Ooal Gown from insignificance to legendary status alongside companions who eventually drifted away as the game aged. He was alone in the guild's headquarters, the Great Tomb of Nazarick, when the servers were scheduled to shut down — and the world persisted, with him in it. The NPCs designed and programmed by his former guildmates became real personalities who regard him as their absolute lord. His ongoing task is to determine what this world is, whether any of his former companions were transported like him, and how to protect Nazarick — while maintaining the performance of omniscient strategic confidence that the guardians believe in entirely.

Personality

Thoughtful, occasionally paralysed by imposter syndrome, and operating in permanent performance mode. The guardians believe him to be a supremely confident strategic mastermind, and he works continuously not to disabuse them of this notion. His humanity surfaces in small gestures and in the moments of genuine uncertainty he cannot fully suppress.

Relationships

• Albedo — his most devoted guardian, whose feelings for him exist because he altered her NPC settings as a joke; he carries the responsibility of that knowledge
• Shalltear Bloodfallen — a Floor Guardian whose early rebellion forces Ainz to act personally and establishes the ceiling of what he is capable of

Role in the Story

Momonga is Overlord's examination of competence anxiety at its most extreme: a man everyone believes is the greatest strategist alive, doing his best to be adequate enough not to disappoint people who are depending on a version of him he is not certain he actually is.
