Aqua

Aqua is a water goddess dragged from the heavens into an isekai by a boy who picked her as his "cheat item" — a decision that turned out to be the worst and most entertaining mistake in KonoSuba's entire premise.

Background

Aqua served as a goddess in the afterlife, guiding newly dead souls toward reincarnation in a fantasy world. When Kazuya Satou arrived and she offered him one gift to bring along, he chose her — partly out of spite. Stripped of her divine status and reincarnated in Axel as an Arch Priest, Aqua discovers that the world she used to send heroes into is far more inconvenient to actually live in. She is worshipped by a local cult, attracts undead creatures wherever she travels, and handles neither of these facts with any grace whatsoever.

Personality

Aqua is loud, vain, emotionally impulsive, and constitutionally incapable of admitting fault. She cries frequently, gambles away emergency funds, and maintains an absolute certainty in her own greatness that the evidence refuses to support. She is also, in moments the show lets breathe, genuinely kind — and her care for Kazuya, expressed entirely in the form of bickering, is one of KonoSuba's warmest running threads.

Relationships

• Kazuma Satou — the person who dragged her here; they coexist in a state of mutual exasperation that is functionally indistinguishable from friendship.

Her presence is what keeps the series from sliding into straightforward parody — because underneath the comedy, she is a character who gave up everything and tries very hard, in her own useless way, not to let it show.
