Darkness

Lalatina Ford Dustiness III — known to her party exclusively as Darkness — is KonoSuba's crusader and its most efficiently deployed joke: a noble knight with impeccable defensive capability, near-zero offensive accuracy, and a relationship with physical punishment that makes her extremely effective at her actual job.

Background

Born into one of the Axel region's prominent noble families, Lalatina grew up in exactly the environment her strict, composed demeanour suggests — formal, privileged, and structured. The thing she is less forthcoming about is that she developed a masochistic streak her noble background provided no natural outlet for, and that adventuring as Darkness gave her the first socially acceptable context for it. She joined Kazuma's party as their crusader and proved immediately that the class description — high defence, low accuracy — was accurate in ways that even other adventurers find remarkable. Her stated motivations and her actual motivations rarely point in the same direction, which is the source of most of her characterisation.

Provocation	Can draw enemy attention toward herself, which plays to her defence and occasionally to her other preferences simultaneously

Personality

Upright, earnest, and constitutionally incapable of admitting to the gap between who she presents herself as and what she actually wants. Her nobility is genuine — she has real principles and acts on them when it matters — and so is the masochism, and the series is careful never to let one completely undermine the other. She is the straight-woman to KonoSuba's absurdism and the straight-woman to her own joke at the same time.

Relationships

• Kazuma Satou — her party leader, the person who most consistently identifies the gap between her self-presentation and her actual motivations, and who exploits it just often enough for the series to acknowledge what he is.
• Aqua — a fellow party member whose theatrical suffering Darkness finds more relatable than she would ever admit.
• Megumin — the third party member; their dynamic is less defined but consistently warm.

Role in the Story

Darkness is KonoSuba's demonstration that a joke can be both a joke and a fully realised character — that you can find someone funny and also understand why they do what they do, and take them seriously when it counts. She anchors the party in a way that the comedy could not sustain without her.
