Boruto Uzumaki

from Boruto: Naruto Next GenerationsPopular character

Boruto Uzumaki is the son of the Seventh Hokage, which means he grew up in his father's shadow long before anyone told him the shadow was an option he could stand in.

Background

He is the first child of Naruto Uzumaki and Hinata Hyūga, born into a Konoha that his father helped protect and into a family where his father's absence — the absence of a Hokage whose village comes first — is the defining domestic experience of his childhood. He is a natural prodigy: where Naruto failed the genin exam three times and needed years of determined effort to develop his abilities, Boruto learned the Rasengan faster than expected and graduated at the top of his class. He possesses the Jōgan, a dōjutsu unique to him that perceives chakra flows and disturbances in ways that the series has not fully mapped at the start of his story. After defeating Momoshiki Ōtsutsuki — a divine being of extraordinary power — he receives a Karma seal, a brand that marks him as Momoshiki's chosen vessel and begins a process with significant implications for who he will be. His arc increasingly involves the tension between his heritage and his identity: he doesn't want to be Naruto and didn't ask to be an Ōtsutsuki vessel, and what he actually wants requires building something that belongs to him rather than to either of those precedents.

Powers & Abilities

AbilityWhat it does
Jōgan (Pure Eye)His unique dōjutsu — it perceives invisible targets, chakra points and flows, and disturbances in the dimensional barriers that connect the series' worlds; its full capabilities are developed gradually as his story progresses
Karma SealThe brand left by Momoshiki — it grants access to Ōtsutsuki power and serves as a vessel mark with implications that extend beyond a simple power boost; the Karma's nature and what it means for his identity is a central preoccupation of his arc
Lightning Style: Vanishing RasenganHis signature technique — a Rasengan variant that incorporates lightning-nature chakra, which he developed early and which serves as his most reliable offensive tool in the series' first phase
Natural AptitudeHe learns quickly, adapts during fights, and has the physical gifts that come with his heritage without the compensating difficulty that made his father's journey what it was; the ease is as much a character issue as the specific abilities

Personality

He is not the person his father was — deliberately, sometimes aggressively, not. He is smarter about some things than Naruto and less instinctively resilient about others. His rebelliousness against his father's legacy is real but not the whole of him; what emerges as his story moves into later arcs is a person who has found his own answers to the questions his father's example posed.

Relationships

  • Sarada Uchiha — his teammate and closest peer, whose goal of becoming Hokage is one he would once have dismissed and now understands differently; their dynamic as they mature is the series' most substantive character relationship
  • Kawaki — the person the series' opening frames as his ultimate antagonist, whose parallel origin and contrasting choices make their relationship the story's central dramatic engine
  • Naruto Uzumaki — his father, whose love is genuine and whose absence created the specific wounds that Boruto carries; what they become to each other as circumstances change is one of the series' most consequential developments

Role in the Story

Boruto is the series' question about what it means to inherit — a name, a legacy, a destiny — and whether the person who inherits those things gets to be someone distinct from what they inherited. His arc's answer develops slowly and with genuine weight.
