Charle is an Exceed — a winged, cat-like being from the realm of Extalia — who has been Wendy Marvell's constant companion since Wendy found her egg and raised her, and whose serious, exacting nature is in every way the counterpart to Happy's cheerful improvisation.

Background

She and Happy share the same essential magical ability — Aera, which allows them to grow wings and fly while carrying a human passenger. The similarity in capability makes the contrast in personality more pointed: where Happy is warm, easy, and guided by uncomplicated affection, Charle is strict, formal in her standards, and genuinely uncomfortable with behavior she considers irresponsible or undignified. She grew up without understanding the source of the precognitive visions that appeared to her as dreams — images of events that hadn't happened yet, which she interpreted without being able to place them in any causal framework. When the truth about the Exceed's origins and the purpose behind their eggs is revealed, it changes a significant part of Charle's understanding of her own history, the community she came from, and the mother she was told was the Queen.
