Ciel Phantomhive

Ciel Phantomhive became the Queen's Watchdog at thirteen — a child who traded his soul to a demon for the chance to survive a ritual that killed his parents, and who has spent every day since turning grief into a management structure.

Background

Ciel witnessed the murder of his parents at a cult ceremony, was himself used in the ritual, and in the depths of that experience made a contract with a demon — Sebastian Michaelis — offering his soul in exchange for the power to take revenge and the demon's absolute service until the debt was settled. He subsequently assumed his family's position as head of Phantomhive house and the title of "Queen's Watchdog," an unofficial role that involves investigating criminal matters too sensitive or dark for normal channels. He runs the Phantomhive toy and confectionary business as a legitimate cover and personal interest.

He is not without feeling; he has simply arranged those feelings into a structure that serves his purpose, and they escape that structure occasionally in ways he would prefer they did not.

Role in the Story

Ciel is Black Butler's study in the cost of a singular purpose — a child who traded everything that might have made him ordinary for the ability to pursue revenge, and who now lives inside that trade without visible regret and occasional invisible grief. The series asks, gently and persistently, whether what he got was worth what he gave.
