Sebastian Michaelis

Sebastian Michaelis is a demon contracted to the Phantomhive household in Black Butler whose impeccable competence as a butler is both the premise of the series' comedy and the casing around its genuine menace.

Background

Sebastian is no ordinary butler. He is a demon who struck a Faustian contract with Ciel Phantomhive on the night of a ritual sacrifice that left the young earl as the sole survivor of his family's destruction. The contract's terms are explicit: Sebastian will serve Ciel perfectly and help him achieve his revenge, in exchange for the right to devour Ciel's soul when the goal is complete. The series plays this arrangement for both comedy — Sebastian's literal perfection at every domestic and combat task is a sustained joke — and for horror, since the audience is never allowed to forget what is underneath the tailored uniform and the cultured manner. His regard for Ciel is real in the sense that a connoisseur's regard for a particularly fine vintage is real.
