Coco

Coco is a girl who grew up watching witches and wanting desperately to be one — and who discovers, in the act of finally touching magic, both the joy she always anticipated and a truth about magic's social structure that requires her to decide what kind of witch she wants to be now that she understands what the system is.

Background

In the world of Witch Hat Atelier, magic is drawn in circles — specific line configurations that produce specific effects — and the knowledge of how these circles work is strictly controlled. The public understanding is that magic is an innate gift: you have it or you don't. Coco, who had no witch lineage, watched witches from the outside and copied the circles she observed from memory, driven by wanting to touch what she could see but couldn't access. When she reproduces one of these circles and triggers an event that petrifies her mother, she is taken in by the witch Qifrey, who teaches her magic properly — including the reason that circle-knowledge is kept from those outside the craft, a reason that implicates the entire social system Coco had been admiring from the outside. Learning magic while carrying this knowledge requires her to hold two things simultaneously: the satisfaction of finally doing what she always wanted, and the weight of understanding what it costs the world for the knowledge to be where it is.
