Witch Hat Atelier

Witch Hat Atelier is the 2026 Bug Films anime adapting Kamome Shirahama's fantasy manga (in Kodansha's Morning Two since 2016), built on a secret witches guard closely: magic is drawn, not inherited, so anyone who inks the right glyph can cast. Coco, a dressmaker's daughter who longs to be a witch, spies Qifrey mending a carriage with a pen, copies a spell from a picture book a masked stranger once sold her, and seals her mother inside crystal. Rather than wipe her memory, as the law expects, Qifrey takes her on as an apprentice beside three other girls, since her half-remembered spell is the only clue to reversing it.

Spells are diagrams the camera lingers on, so exams and steady hands carry the tension other fantasy gives to fights. Director Ayumu Watanabe (Children of the Sea) chose not to simplify Shirahama's dense, etched artwork, and the premiere was pushed from 2025 to 2026 for quality's sake. Episode 5 turns a two-page dragon rescue into over a minute of animation, and Coco's voice actress, Rena Motomura, said it took as many as 20,000 key drawings, several times the norm. Yuka Kitamura, one of the composers behind Bloodborne and Elden Ring, wrote her first anime score here.

Be warned that fights are rare, the middle moves at classroom pace, and the closing episodes turn to body horror the cosy early weeks barely foreshadow. As of October 2026 the anime has one season of 13 episodes, streamed by Crunchyroll outside Asia from April to June 2026. A second season was confirmed on 29 June 2026, after the finale's Japanese broadcast, with no date or window yet. Episode 13 ends at chapter 23, closing volume 4, so readers continue from chapter 24; Shirahama reckoned in July 2026 that the still-running manga was only about a third told.
