Cú Chulainn
from Fate/stay nightFan favourite
Cú Chulainn is the great hero of Irish mythology summoned as the Lancer-class Servant — a warrior who fought with a cursed spear that killed whatever it struck, whose characteristic response to a losing position was to keep fighting, and whose instinct toward honest combat outlasted every allegiance the Holy Grail War asked him to maintain.
Background
In his life, Cú Chulainn was the greatest warrior of Ulster, trained by the divine smith Scáthach on the Shadow Lands island at the edge of the world. Scáthach taught him every technique she knew and then gave him Gáe Bolg — a cursed spear that reverses cause and effect, killing by first striking the heart and then performing the thrust — as a weapon too dangerous to pass to anyone she trusted less. His legend involved battles that defined eras and loyalties that produced tragedy; the people he cared about died because of currents he could not redirect, and he faced the end of his own story with the same composure he had applied to everything else. As a Servant he brings the complete skill set and the specific temperament: a warrior who fights best when the situation is already difficult and whose respect for capable opponents is stronger than his investment in whose side they occupy.
Powers & Abilities
| Ability | What it does |
|---|---|
| Gáe Bolg | The crimson cursed spear, a Noble Phantasm that operates by reversing causality — the wound to the heart is the cause, and the thrust is the effect; conventional defensive abilities frequently cannot prevent it because the fatal strike precedes the action that delivers it |
| Battle Continuation (A Rank) | One of the highest-rated versions of this skill in the Servant system, reflecting a historical reality in which Cú Chulainn fought through wounds that would disable most combatants; he can remain functional past the point where lesser warriors would have stopped |
| Rune Magic | Cú Chulainn is a practitioner of Celtic rune magic, giving him access to barrier creation, reinforcement, and various utility capabilities beyond his martial skill; the runes provide options in situations where raw combat is not the most efficient solution |
| Disengage | The ability to reset a combat situation to its initial conditions — returning a battle to its opening state when a fight has developed in an unfavorable direction; a tactical tool that reflects the deep experience of someone who has fought long enough to know when a position is worth abandoning |
Personality
Straightforward in his pleasures and his standards — he wants a genuine fight, he respects anyone who can provide one regardless of their faction, and he does not extend that respect to people who can't or won't actually engage. The warrior culture that formed him produced a man who measures value in courage and capability rather than alignment, which makes him both a reliable ally when he commits and someone whose loyalty flows toward the worthy rather than toward whatever contract happens to be active.
Relationships
- Shirou Emiya — the Master whose situation Cú Chulainn evaluates against his own standards rather than the terms of the contract; the quality of his regard for Shirou is ultimately determined by what Shirou demonstrates rather than what the summoning arrangement stipulates
- Artoria Pendragon — the King of Knights whose role in the Fifth Holy Grail War creates both alliance and opposition with Cú Chulainn depending on the arrangement of factions; the mutual recognition between two legendary warriors is present even when their objectives diverge
Role in the Story
Cú Chulainn is the Fate series' most honest expression of what the warrior archetype actually looks like when it's taken seriously — someone whose commitment to real combat is not a character note added for flavor but a genuine organizing principle that determines every significant decision he makes. His scenes consistently reward the viewer who is paying attention to what he actually does rather than just what he is described as.
