Ekubo

from Mob Psycho 100Popular character

Ekubo, called Dimple in English releases, is the green blob-shaped evil spirit of Mob Psycho 100 who arrives as a cult leader chasing godhood, loses in seconds to Shigeo Kageyama, and then attaches himself to the boy as a scheming, unexpectedly loyal sidekick.

Background

Ekubo's life before death is left almost blank; the series picks him up as a spirit already notorious among the dead. His plan is simple: harvest human faith, feed on the energy it gives off, and eventually wear a body again. So he builds a cheerful religious group, the LOL cult, staging small miracles through possession until ordinary people queue up to worship him. Arataka Reigen's consultation office takes the case as routine cult-extraction work, which is how Ekubo meets the one middle schooler he should have avoided. Mob scatters him without breaking stride, and the surviving scrap of spirit follows him home.

Powers & Abilities

AbilityWhat it does
PossessionTakes over humans, animals or objects and puppets them.
Spirit absorptionDevours weaker spirits to grow larger and hit harder.
IntangibilitySlips through walls and scouts with no body to injure.
Selective visibilityOnly espers and sensitive people perceive him.
Crowd manipulationSteers crowds of believers, his oldest trick.

None of that makes him a heavyweight; any competent esper can disperse him. His value is tactical. He scouts unseen, seizes an enemy's body at the worst possible moment, and after swallowing enough spirits punches well above his weight.

Personality

Ekubo heckles. He floats at shoulder height offering terrible advice, pitching schemes to monetise Mob's power, needling him about Tsubomi, and calling himself the boy's true mentor while freeloading. He mocks Reigen for conning clients with a straight face, which is precisely what he was doing the day they met. He panics loudly, flees first, and gets swatted around like a balloon. Then something goes genuinely wrong, the jokes stop, and he plants himself between Mob and whatever is coming.

Relationships

  • Shigeo Kageyama (Mob): began as a body to steal, ended up the one person Ekubo will not abandon.
  • Arataka Reigen: two frauds orbiting the same student, forever arguing over who actually teaches him anything.
  • Teruki Hanazawa: an early enemy turned dependable field partner who treats Ekubo as backup, not a punchline.
  • Ritsu Kageyama: Mob's brother, wary of the spirit haunting his family, yet an ally when Claw shows up.

Role in the Story

Ekubo is the show's temptation and its running gag at once. Every time Mob decides not to turn his power on people, Ekubo argues the opposite: take the shortcut, cash in, hit back harder. Saying the selfish thing out loud keeps the central question alive without lecturing. He doubles as a handy plot device: an invisible scout who can seize a body mid-fight. Later arcs hand him a far larger part, tied straight back to that old hunger for worship. For the wider cast, our Mob Psycho 100 character guide shows where he sits among the espers.

Frequently asked

Is Dimple a villain or a good guy?

He starts as a real antagonist, farming human belief to make himself a god, and never fully loses the selfishness. What changes is attachment: across three seasons he stays beside Mob in fights any sensible spirit would flee. Most fans read him as a reformed nuisance rather than a hero.

How strong is Dimple compared to Mob?

Not close, in raw terms. Mob can disperse him almost casually, and serious espers manage it too. Ekubo's threat is situational: possession, invisibility and spirit-eating let him do damage brute strength cannot.
