Franky
from ONE PIECEPopular character
Franky is a self-built cyborg from Water Seven whose body runs on cola, whose shipbuilding produced the Thousand Sunny, and whose loudly expressed sentimentality conceals a history that makes his commitment to the Straw Hats both earned and meaningful.
Background
Franky was raised in Water Seven under the shipbuilder Tom, who built Gol D. Roger's ship and took responsibility for the Sea Train that eventually led to his own death. Franky survived a near-fatal incident by rebuilding himself with whatever materials were to hand — metal, technology, and eventually cola-powered mechanisms that now constitute most of his torso and arms. He ran a gang of bounty hunters in Water Seven before the Enies Lobby arc brought him into direct conflict and eventual alliance with the Straw Hats. He later spent two years upgrading himself at Vegapunk's former laboratory.
Powers & Abilities
| Ability | What it does |
|---|---|
| Cyborg Body | His modified physique provides exceptional strength, durability, and a range of built-in weapons including cannons, rockets, and a laser |
| Franky Shogun | A giant robot mech he built during the timeskip, piloted from inside; used for large-scale combat and the kind of entrance that the series clearly enjoys |
| Shipbuilding | Master-level craftsmanship; built the Thousand Sunny, the Straw Hats' second ship, which is described as Tom's legacy made real |
| Cola Power | His systems run on cola stored internally; inadequate cola results in degraded performance and personality changes |
Personality
Exuberant, dramatic, and unembarrassed about either quality. Franky cries at things that move him and poses for things that excite him, and he does both in a way that is entirely sincere. Underneath the performance is a person who lost his guardian, rebuilt himself out of necessity, and now directs that same resourcefulness toward keeping the people he has decided to protect in one piece.
Relationships
- Nami — the crew's navigator, whose relationship with Franky involves her frequently being horrified by his aesthetic choices and him ignoring this entirely
- Usopp — the crew's sniper and one of his most natural collaborators; both have a craftsman's sensibility and a taste for dramatic invention
- Sanji — a crewmate whose pragmatism occasionally collides with Franky's showmanship in ways both entertaining and productive
Role in the Story
Franky is the Straw Hats' builder — not just of the ship, but of the sense that the crew is a structure worth maintaining. His arc at Enies Lobby is one of the series' cleanest examples of someone joining a crew not because they were recruited but because they decided to, and the decision was permanent.
