Hawk is the Boar Hat Tavern's official cleaning crew, Meliodas's self-appointed partner, and the Seven Deadly Sins' most persistent proof that courage and genuine loyalty do not require impressive power to be real.

Background

He introduces himself as the Captain of the Order of Scraps Disposal — which is exactly what he does, eating the magical-energy-rich food scraps from the Boar Hat's kitchen and converting them through a digestive system that the series eventually reveals is not straightforwardly pig. He has lived with Meliodas long enough to have a relationship built on genuine familiarity, and he maintains an elaborate self-image as a brave and important figure in the Sins' adventures despite his demonstrated terror at virtually every genuine threat the adventures involve. The gap between this self-image and reality is the series' most consistent source of comedy involving him. But Hawk is not simply comic relief: he is consistently brave in the moments that count, consistently present for the people he cares about, and his nature — which the series reveals to be considerably stranger than it first appears — connects him to the story's deeper mythology in ways that give his seemingly incidental presence a retrospective significance. His self-presentation as brave and capable does not match his instinctive response to danger, which is loud retreat. But the instinctive response does not match his actual behavior when the moment demands it, which is to stay and be present for the people he loves. The series takes this seriously: Hawk is not brave because he is unafraid but because he is afraid and shows up anyway, which is the better kind of bravery and the kind the series values more than the performed version.
