Joker

from Fire ForceFan favourite

Joker is Fire Force's most enigmatic presence — a solo operative who answers to no faction, knows more than anyone else about the series' deepest conspiracy, and deploys that knowledge precisely and infuriatingly on his own schedule.

Background

Joker's past connects directly to the Holy Sol Temple — the religious institution at the center of Fire Force's power structure — where he was a trainee known as Five-Two. He endured brutal training under the temple's methods and survived by developing his own abilities outside the system. He left, or was expelled, and emerged as an independent information broker and fighter who operates outside the Special Fire Force, the Evangelists, and the Tokyo Empire alike. His investment in Shinra Kusakabe is genuine but operates on his own terms: he provides information and occasional combat support, but never integrates into the company, never accepts command, and always has a card he hasn't played. The playing card motif is not incidental — it is how he frames his entire operating philosophy.

Powers & Abilities

AbilityWhat it does
Wildfire (Second Generation)Controls and ignites existing fire rather than generating it; uses this to imbue his playing cards with fire-based kinetic and explosive properties
Card ThrowingHis primary offensive technique; cards thrown with exceptional precision carry fire properties and can penetrate defences at range
Hand of God (Adolla Burst related)Access to Adolla abilities tied to his time at the Holy Sol Temple; the full extent of his Adolla-linked power is revealed gradually
Information NetworkHis most consistently dangerous asset; he knows the conspiracy's shape before other characters do, which makes him the de facto briefing source for key revelations

Personality

Performatively casual in a way that obscures how much he has worked out. He is not actually neutral — he has a clear stake in Shinra's success and in exposing the conspiracy — but he maintains the aesthetic of someone who could walk away at any point. His interactions with Arthur Boyle tend toward comedy; his interactions with Shinra trend toward something more like a mentor relationship he refuses to formally acknowledge.

Relationships

  • Shinra Kusakabe — the person whose path Joker monitors and occasionally redirects; his interest in Shinra is the closest thing he has to a stated commitment
  • Arthur Boyle — a firefighter whose knight-fantasy worldview collides with Joker's card motifs in ways the series plays for comic effect
  • Iris — the 8th Company member whose connection to the Holy Sol Temple intersects with Joker's own history there

Role in the Story

Joker is Fire Force's structural information valve — the character who controls when the audience and protagonists learn what the conspiracy actually is. His position outside every faction is not just a personality choice; it is what makes him useful, since a character embedded in any one system would have been co-opted or killed before delivering the intelligence that actually matters. His arc is about whether someone who has lived outside everything can eventually choose a side when it matters enough.
