Kouichi Sakakibara

Kouichi Sakakibara transfers into class 3-3 of Yomiyama North Middle School in May 1998 and immediately breaks the one rule the class has collectively agreed to follow — by talking to the girl everyone else has decided doesn't exist.

Background

He is fifteen years old, the only child in the Sakakibara family, and his mother died giving birth to him — a fact the series notes early without making it central, though it threads into the story's larger preoccupations with death and its reach into the living. He comes to Yomiyama from outside and arrives without the conditioning that the rest of the class has lived with long enough to internalize. When he notices Mei Misaki — a girl with an eyepatch whom the class treats as invisible, neither confirming nor denying her existence as a social matter — he doesn't understand the rules he's being asked to follow, and his natural curiosity pushes him to understand what's happening rather than conform to a dynamic that seems wrong to him. This makes him the right protagonist for Another and the wrong student to enter class 3-3: someone whose instinct is always to investigate rather than accept.
